Sonny Liston was born in Mississippi and lived in Arkansas until his late teens when he then moved to St. Louis. He is not in any way from Philadelphia.
Danny Garcia is one of my favorites and Philly is the boxing capital of the US. Good number of prominent fighters from Massachusetts too though.

Is boxing even relevant any more--specifically, heavyweight division??...it seems to have gone the way of the 8 track cassette, Smith Corona typewriter, and Sony Walkman

Naw its had a pretty big resurgence in the past ~5 years. heavyweights less so but i could name 3 or 4 off the top of the dome Wilder, Fury, Klitschko, Anthony Joshua
No. Liston ain't "from" Philly. He stayed in Phillly for like a couple years. You're reaching. Joe Frazier made Philly his adopted hometown but not Liston.
exactly. Fair to surmise Liston stayed there for a few years because its a boxing mecca

I must be tone deaf as none of those names mean anything to me...not a fan of UFC either.

Same here. The only name I recognize is Klitscho, and that’s probably because there is two of them. Not a fan of UFC either. Watching guys teabag each other while throwing punches isn’t for me.
When I think of boxing I think of Detroit first. Probably because of Joe Louis, his fist statue they always show during every national broadcast of all sports, and the arena named after him they got plenty of airtime when the Red Wings were in the playoffs 25 years straight. Tommy Hearns was a beast too when I watched boxing as a kid and Detroit was always mentioned/represented during his fights.
Just from my personal view, UFC MMA is more popular than boxing now. I don't know about dollars which is the real deciding factor. but I'm a little biased from watching UFC since the Brazilian fighting days wuth the Gracie Bros

McGregor vs Mayweather should've definitely showed you which sport is more popular.

Boxing is more popular in a lot of other countries (Mexico, UK and Ireland, former Soviet bloc, Philippines, etc.) than MMA.
In the U.S., there is a racial element to boxing many people don't want to admit (namely that there are few if any White fighters not of eastern or southern European ancestry). That's not an issue in eastern Europe/Eurasia where guys like the Klitschkos, Kovalev, Loma, Provodnikov, GGG, Bivol, etc. all enjoy immense fame and popularity. It's also not as much of an issue in the UK where a guy like Amir Khan is a huge media sensation (still).
Boxing is more popular amongst older folks blacks and Latinos.
I wonder don’t white Americans guys box but will do MMA? Not a ton of white American MMA stars but there’s a few I think-virtually none in boxing.
