Living in the Bay Area, I'm surprised Oakland is that much better known. Tend to think of them as close to equal.

How about that. The biggest city in the bay area is the least well known. San Jose has the most absolutely pathetic excuse for public relations in the entire world.

They might as well just split it up into a bunch of small cities or just deannex portions on the edge so it won't have the pointless distinction of being bigger than San Francisco.

Oakland.
Through music and Sport teams.

Never heard of SJ until my adult life and even then it was probably due to the tech boom.

Exactly, within the Bay Area they're considered on relatively equal footing in terms of importance. In certain ways, San Jose is more prominent (and definitely for anyone living on the Peninsula or the South Bay).

Clearly, the way these cities are viewed on the national level is a whole ‘nother story.

Nationally people don’t understand the dynamics between cities within a state. They know what they see from sports teams music and movies. That’s it.

Well, that's normal. What people far away perceive is different from locals in any area of the country. There's no right way of looking at it as neither viewpoint is incorrect.

As far as local perception, let me put it to you this way, most cities would have a difficult time with establishing their own positive image being a 4-mile bridge from San Francisco, imagine then a city with high crime and lots of poor people? What do yall think San Franciscans had to say Oakland then?

The answer in one word: Merciless.

Never mind the blatant racist and classist overtones in the criticism, a blanket of generalized stereotypes was thrown over Oakland. It didnt matter that much of Oakland was quite nice, nope it was all ghetto.

Then what happened? They themselves were priced out of SF and suddenly Oakland became "like Brooklyn"

Lol score 1 for karma.

SJ gets it too for being sprawly and suburban, but not as bad as what Oakland gets, not even close. Lol

The word " positive" is confusing me a bit..so you're saying SF puts a negative influence on nearby cities? or SF in general attracts lot of negativity?

I think he means that most cities would have a hard enough time establishing any kind of nationwide reputation, let alone with a top-tier-fame city like SF just a short bridge ride across the bay.
