Wimington is the better layout and design with its historic downtown but Athens is livelier and with a bigger economy .
Wilmington is the right choice here

Wilmington is more like a mini Savannah or Charleston so it might not be a fair comparison with Athens. I would compare Chapel Hill more with Athens.
