Cary, Wilmington, Asheville, Greenville, CDNC board fawns over these places, and Fayetteville is CDNC's resident punching bag....

Fayetteville was already larger than all of these places, even pre-2000s annexations, besides metro Asheville. But as was noted a couple times over the years, Fayetteville's "on the ground" influence and population has always included adjacent counties that were never included in Fayetteville's two-county MSA. I'm not sure if you were actively posting or not but that's been mentioned several times, people who have lived or spent ample time in Fayetteville and its immediate surroundings know this...

Adding either Harnett or Robeson to Fayetteville isn't the biggest surprise...

Boston lost 3,000 people while Providence gained 4,000.

Birmingham would be down 61,000 people.
Richmond MSA would have an 11% adjustment from what its 2018 numbers were. Interesting to see how they adjust Richmond city down...

You realize though that Houston is also the alternative energy capital of the country?

Houston's economy is based on energy, not specifically oil and gas.

I’m also a bit confused how that squared with the Massachusetts total gain of 10,000 if Springfield, Barnstable Pittsfield, Worcester, Boston combine for +60,000 that means the the Islands have to lose 49,000 or like 130% of their population.

Grand Rapids has surpassed Rochester, and is starting to close in on Birmingham. Though who knows what's going to happen to trends after everything going on right now. Though I don't think the current situation will have any noticeable impact on the 2020 census numbers. It's too close to the end of the cycle, probably won't see the impact until the 2021 estimates.

Energy prices are plummeting. There is no benefit to Houston to have plummeting energy prices.

It looks like the new metro area estimates are based on revised definitions. See the OMB bulletin from September 2018 below:

https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-conten...etin-18-04.pdf

Regarding a few metro areas mentioned in some of the posts above where odd population trends were noted:

- Harnett County, NC was added to metro Fayetteville
- Walker County, AL was dropped from metro Birmingham
- Franklin County, MA was added to metro Springfield

In other words, use caution comparing the 2019 estimates with those released from previous years, since the metro definitions are not always the same.

So basically they did a pseudo realignment outside of the normal period. Birmingham must have lost a commuter county, the only way to explain it's drop in ranking.
