College Towns Nationwide Next to Be Counted in the 2020 Census
"Just before summer break at colleges and universities across the nation, the U.S. Census Bureau is sending census takers door to door in college towns to make sure students and local residents are counted in the 2020 Census. The move is part of an effort called Early Nonresponse Followup (NRFU), which will count nearly 7.5 million housing units from April 9 through the end of July. (Scheduled for release April 9.)"
However, due to the virus crisis, college town counts, no doubt, will be a bust where colleges are only holding classes online for the rest of the semester. Also colleges are telling students they gotta move out of campus student housing when they return from Spring Break. They will move back to their home towns. So maybe census takers should be present when students start moving out. Off campus students won't want to stick around living in college towns that are shut down, especially if their home towns aren't. College students who leave early and do bother filling out census forms will probably list their current city of residence, even though that is likely not the correct answer for the census.
It is too late for that. Most schools especially up here in the northeast sent students home/moved them off campus about a week ago. There may be some schools that could still get counts but for most college towns the 2020 numbers are probably going to be off.
Maybe college towns should request the census taking be extended until this fall when things will hopefully return to normal. Maybe the entire census should be extended.

Nearly every major city also has a significant college presence too. While it will be a bigger hit on strictly college towns, the numbers will be off across the board if it's intended that students are counted in the city/county/state where they are studying.

I would not be surprised if a place like NYC has a new 0 flow of college students. Syracuse, UConn, BU, Binghamton U etc are full of NYC kids. Sure Columbia and NYU gets kids from all over the world but there are tons of "exports".
I agree. They always ha e the best data sets first.
