Plano is the golden goose in Texas. In the 100,000+ category it's probably the best suburb in Texas. Legitimately every large suburb in Texas looks at Plano as "golden standard" stuff. While you can't exactly describe Plano as inner-ring, it's position within DFW is excellent, being so close to Downtown yet offering the same if not more than the Georgetown's, Round Rock's, The Woodland's, Frisco's and McKinney's, Sugar Land's, Allen's etcetera. Also on the school thing arguably Plano has two of the most highly regarded public (non-test/non-charter) schools. The fact that it's so old in "Texas" years yet still shines is a testament, compared to it's fellow suburbs in that same region like Garland, Arlington, Richardson, Carrolton, Mesquite, Grand Prairie etc. The closest area would probably be Memorial, and that area is almost completely in the city of Houston, and the northern half of it's school district is still a work in progress.
If I had one complaint about Plano/Frisco, it would be the toll roads (at least on the west side of Plano).
That's part of the reason why I opted against living that far north
EDIT: Make that 2 complaints. It is a fluid situation that's changing rapidly because of how places like Celina, Prosper, Melissa and Anna are exploding. That said, as things stand in 2020, West Plano and especially Frisco feel as though they're on the edge of civilization.
What I like about Addison is that it's literally in the center of everything desirable in DFW. All of the corporate job hubs and retailers/restaurants you can think of are within a 10 mile radius and a short drive away

So traffic in Plano/Frisco actually not bad at all? Better than Irvine traffic? I'm not talking about California vs. Texas in general, but Irvine vs. Plano/Frisco specifically.
See my post above about the toll roads.
But the other thing Texas as going for it are the frontage roads along the highways
I would far prefer Irvine for the natural setting, proximity to Los Angeles, and weather. But if I really had to choose between the two because of work, I would have to go with Plano for affordability.
