Reading this living in NoVA, I don't quite get how NoVA beats NoNJ in housing. If you're looking to buy a house, first time buyer, there seems to be more immediate, affordable and accessible options in NoNJ (inside 287) than in NoVA. Anything east of Fairfax county is an absolute wash where you have to make major compromises to buy a house. You'll have to go out even to Stafford County/Fredericksburg to buy a SFH that has good potential for appreciation. Meanwhile, there seem to be a lot of pockets of New Jersey that have good housing stock at affordable prices (Edison, Woodbridge, Plainfield), and given that transportation is a lot better, those homes seem even more desirable and accessible to a buyer. I know taxes may be an issue for those who have had there home for a while, but it's hard to believe that NoVA beats NJ in housing, especially given what you get with the house (transportation, easier access to a larger city, etc).
Alexandria is the only place in northern Virginia that's remotely interesting and even then gentrification has made it just as sterile as the rest of that side of the river.
Fairfax is one of the most obnoxious and least appealing places in the country for me.

If you include Fredericksburg in NoVA, then I would include it also.

As a Virginian living in NNJ I have to agree.
