SF Bay area w/o SF would still be a good place to live, with two major cities (Oakland and San Jose),
suburbs of all kinds, and woodsy Marin County for nature nuts like me.

I disagree with Portland. Multnomah County contains a good chunk of the Columbia River Gorge and, thus, has places like Multnomah Falls, Rooster Rock State Park, Sauvie Island, Oxbow Park, and numerous spots that are popular especially during summer months. Multnomah Falls gets over two million visitors each year, making it the most-visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest.

If we're talking urban attractions, then I'd probably agree.

The best parts of the Detroit metro are not in the city of Detroit. And there is some great stuff over there.
