The really high percentages in Nashville, Cincinnati, Detroit, etc. for Asians is probably due to the fact that these cities have quite small Asian populations to begin with and haven't been magnets for Asian immigrants throughout the decades (think older Vietnamese, Hmong, Chinese, etc. folks who moved to the US with low educational achievement to places like LA, Queens, San Francisco, etc.); the Asian populations they do have are small and likely high-skilled workers that moved there.

As for the black numbers, black people making 36% of what a white family makes in Milwaukee is an embarrassment. The top end of MSAs for black households is almost the same percentages as the bottom for Asians.
Yes, I've read Milwaukee is the city with the biggest difference in college degrees and income, between the Black population and the White population. There are many, many people with college degrees in Milwaukee, with high incomes. The opportunities for the Black and White population without degrees, has been very limited, due to the decrease in availability of blue collar jobs. Hence, the differences.

To be fair to those New England areas, they do have places/neighborhoods with a substantial to high black percentage that are relatively middle class. Especially Hartford and Boston. I believe in the Providence area, Cranston has a decent sized black population with a substantial black middle class and on the MA size of the metro, Taunton I believe is similar.
IMO, I think the number of people making $50K+ is a better indicator of how good an area is for middle class people than median family income.

While older, these lists do what you did using per capita income: https://www.bizjournals.com/bizjourn...cially-in.html

https://www.bizjournals.com/bizjourn...me-gap-in.html

https://www.bizjournals.com/buffalo/...e=&CPIorderBy=

If you expand the list to the top 101 metros, using this criteria Poughkeepsie and Dayton are in the top 10 when looking at white PCI and the gap between blacks, Hispanics and Asians. Meaning, both of those areas are in the top 10 for lowest PCI gaps.

That's fine. I'm just saying that those areas do have areas where you can find a substantial to even predominant black percentage where the black residents are middle class.

In some areas, you may be able to go a little bit lower, depending on the household size as well. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pew...years/%3famp=1

Providence, RI being that high is very surprising if not suspect.

Rest of the list looks on point. Thanks for compiling this.

And in that way, Chicago and Milwaukee seem to really mirror each other (which, makes a lot of sense).

This is great data, thanks as always 18montclair. First time I've genuinely been proud of Greater Boston in a data set like this.

Now, if only some of the top cities above could advance equity in education. I don't have the answers without massive government overreach.. But some combination of desegregation in the ways non-white students go to one school, and white/Asian students go to another, and programs to make inner city public schools more appetizing - by way of earning power for teachers and updated facilities- will massively help.
