It didn't feel like the sister neighborhoods in Detroit and Cleveland, but it certainly felt like a pretttttty rough area.

I don't know if I'd call these areas slums. But, there's probably more barren neighborhoods and urban blight in Milwaukee than I realized.
Certainly looks significantly better than the worst areas in New England. Which most people would call too bad to begin with.

I am surprised Providence and Riverside are ahead of Boston though...
Usually the people who say that either:
A) Never have been to New England
B) dont know anybody of color from New England
C) Let the 1970s bussing situation of South Boston (a rigorous step of assimilation for its time) dictate to the overall feeling of Boston.
D) Know Nothing about the 1996 BPD reform
E) Only appreciate the state for election years.

These statistics, Nubian Square Iniative, and the everyday people you meet from Boston or New England will tell you otherwise. Its not perfect and sure is not the best.... But some (only some) people think its the wordt city for African Americans. When in reality they chose to ignore that cities like Chicago, New York, Milwaukee and Philadelphia are far less equitable and Integrated.

Although, I must say Boston politics is really forcing this INTEGRATION initiative to the point where it feels unnatural. But hey, its something

The pitiful black metrics really are embarrassing. Why doesn't it see more black out movement?
I have noticed the correlation between suburbanization and higher median family/household income. Nearly 90% of all blacks in the Milwaukee MSA live in the city itself. There has yet to be a mass migration to the suburbs, where incomes are higher among all races and latinos across the country in large metros.

It is ironic you say that, as the middle class black people in the area are in Brown Deer, Glendale, the outer NW portion of the city, which is more suburban in terms of its look and maybe parts of Wauwatosa and Menominee Falls.

You're looking at it backwards. They move to the suburbs because they've gotten higher incomes.

Also the suburbs don't necessarily give you access to higher-paid jobs. Most of those are within the city limits that people commute to.

Pittsburgh

Compared to other major metropolitan areas, the average credit score seems to be above average in "white areas," and average in "non-white areas."

Very interesting article in the WSJ this week, regarding many employees leaving the Bay Area and moving to Bozeman (the example), as they no longer need to live in the Bay Area to keep their jobs. All these numbers posted in this thread, and so many others, are going to lose their relevance in the next couple of years, I believe, as people are choosing to live in areas not so exorbitantly expensive.

How did you get these numbers? I'm asking, because I was trying to find information for areas not on the list and couldn't find similar information.

After you have selected the year and geographies for you query, instead of following the boxes to select the income, go to the search tab at the top of the screen and type in 'median family income without clicking on search, what happens is a drop down box will appear including options for black families, asian families etc. Or if you do click on search the results will appear on the left of the screen and you can scroll through to the different groups.

Hope that helps.
