It's amazing how when it comes to cities, even though not one is the same, we compare them all together. Like boxing, there's different weight class dues to the size of the boxers. They never mix classes. So how can we honestly be putting cities with 500K to million plus population with cities 100-300K. That's not even fair. Cities 300K+ should be per 100K and cities 299K less should be per 50K. You can't tell me for example, Baton Rouge is more "dangerous" than let's say Chicago. Smaller cities are getting the short end of the stick when being compared along with mega large cities.
The per 100k metric is suppose to be a hypothetical equalizer, in that every city is now at a population of 100k. It's not perfect, because the larger the city then the greater of likelihood there are safe neighborhoods to offset some of the violence on the opposite end of the spectrum, and vice-versa also tend to be the case. That is why cities that have over a million people will typically see a murder rate no higher than 33-35 per 100k, and much smaller cities are more likely to see higher rates.
There is the per 1,000 metric that is commonly used to gauge total crime or violent crime per capita. I think this metric is appropriate to gauge the violence of cities under 100k population.
Philly has had a very violent last few days, in regards to both fatal and non fatal shootings. The city is inching very close to 200 homicides for the year.

What's going on with Burnaby and Richmond. I understand when suburbs get large their bound to have some questionable areas, but the specific gangland killings in these two cities are brazen to the point were it's comparable to America.
At least 5 killed and 24 others shot in less than 24 hours, including a two year old girl shot (non fatal) in Little Village.
Not a fatal incident, but three men were shot during a shootout in a River North parking garage Saturday morning. Among those shot was the rapper Lil Reese(who came up with Chief Keef), and apparently he was involved in car theft activity. smh Most of these Chicago Drill rappers do not know how to let go of the streets after they have gain fame.

What is this? His fourth shooting? I feel like he gets shot every other year at this rate. You'd think he'd move away from the city and live some were else where he isn't as known so he can keep a low-key profile.

The second time as far as I know, though he's been in other altercations. He was almost killed in a suburb two years ago. He should take a page from Chief Keef and move somewhere far away and never come back.

Why wouldn’t Baton Rouge be more dangerous than Chicago if it has a higher murder rate? Is Gary safer than Chicago because it’s smaller too? Chicago has tons of neighborhoods that have few if any homicides per year. They should just be discounted because Chicago is larger?
The intrinsic value of rates vs raw numbers is that it adjusts for population differences.
