Numbers are usually tallied by the calendar year a homicide investigation is started. So assaults and unexplained deaths from prior years count toward the year it was assigned as a homicide. Its the same with clearing cases, If a case from 2019 is cleared in 2021, it counts toward the 2021 clearance rate. Departments also audit their crime stats more than once, usually internally then by the state, before they become official so that number could still change.

That's awesome! One of the great features of Boston and its metro is that you actually feel safe walking around.

Demographics make a big difference.

"StatCan’s 2019 homicide data, released on Oct. 29, shows one-third of homicide victims were visible minorities — 44 per cent of whom were identified as Black, yet Black people account for only 3.4 per cent of the Canadian population."

The Mass murder rate has always been a bit lower than CT's, although both states have always been below the national average.

Still, if you look at this list, despite the fact that Hartford and New Haven have almost as many murders as Boston, a city 5 times larger than them, a wealthy city like Stamford, CT still has more murders than working class cities in Mass like Fall River and Lynn. Why is this?

North Hartford is most dangerous area in New England slightly worst than Dorchester, Mattapan, Roxbury last year there was over 200 shot in Hartford not too far off from Boston. New Haven and Bridgeport have some rough areas. Wealthy cities like Norwalk and Stamford have some seedy spots that seen their better days.
