Had to revisit this one.

You include Wahlberg and New Kids but not Guru/Gang Starr, New Edition/Bell Biv DeVoe, Meghan Trainor, Joyner Lucas, Clairo, Passion Pit, or Tracy Chapman?

I'd say it calls attention to how far mainstream rock has fallen. The top rock songs of today are all from the 90s. (And almost entirely from Seattle)

Jacksonville, Florida has a lot of Southern Rock. Although Detroit is up there due to Motown, but also Bob Seger and Eminem.

Believe it or not, 3 of the biggest Bay Area hardcore punk bands were originally from Houston: Verbal Abuse, DRI and MDC

And can't forget that the Bay Area was THE epicenter of the US thrash metal scene, with smaller scenes in LA and NY

Yes, but Metallica, Testament and Exodus are all from the East Bay.

Also, Salt Lake City is becoming a bit of a Deathcore Capital, and most Death Metal bands are from Tampa.

Houston has to be added to this list with Scarface, Destiny's Child, Beyonce, Mike Jones, UGK and various others that I haven't mentioned and now Megan Thee Stallion.

Metallica started in Los Angeles, in the pre-Cliff Burton Era. They moved up to the Bay Area after orignal bass player Ron McGovney quit and Cliff replaced him. They couldn't get a good following in the LA area, so Cliff, who was from El Cerrito, invited them to move up there, where thrash had a bigger audience. The rest is history....
