The average person buying a house normally has a professional job of some sort, right? Engineer, nurse, dental hygienist, attorney, accountant, etc. etc. These are jobs that are in demand in pretty much every large metro in the country. None of the above listed professions are having a hard time finding good-paying jobs in Orlando/Tampa.
This is true but the point he is trying to make is that these professions are more plentiful in DFW by comparison. Orlando/Tampa main industries are mostly service and tourism.
Florida definitely is far superior in terms of attractions over Texas. But besides that, if a competitive job market is important, DFW would be better than Orlando/Tampa/Sarasota. You can still find bargains in DFW and find a high paying job.

I guess... What I'm not getting is how this would impact the typical professional...? In Orlando/Tampa, there are FAR less professionals seeking those jobs, because most are hired into the service industry. As such, I would almost think it's easier to get a, say, engineering job in Orlando vs DVW? (Probably not... But you get my point.) It's not hard to land a professional job in either place.

The thing is.. Just because he/she is right doesn't mean you're not right. DFW has more high paying jobs and a more competitive job market. But that's not the deciding factor for everyone. Not everyone thinks the same way you do. If OP thinks the job market in Orlando/Tampa/Sarasota is good enough while enjoying the beaches and family activities they can't get in DFW, why would they be wrong for their preference. Some people prioritize job market, some amenities, and some prefer need a balance. While OTS IS DEFINITELY behind DFW in jobs, they're not declining by any means. If they like the family activities in OTS and don't mind the gap in employment, who's to say theyre wrong?
I love both regions a lot. I agree, as one poster said, that Dallas/Ft. Worth is one single metro area and Tampa/St.Petersburg and Orlando are two separate metros. But, I can understand merging that area of the I-4 corridor for comparison purposes because they share so much and are so close to each other. I lived in Orlando with my wife and kids for a year in the mid 2000's and LOVED it. Between DFW and Tampa Bay/Orlando, I would go with Tampa Bay/Orlando and live in Lakeland. It's in the TSP metro area (in my rankings), yet has incredible access to all Tampa Bay and Orlando have to offer. It has the best 90-minute radius recreational asset score per capita in the nation. Lakeland has a gorgeous downtown on a huge, beautiful lake. Though we love where we are now (Charlotte) and don't plan on ever leaving, if we were to live in any other area of the U.S., it would be Lakeland. We just love that entire area. Yet, it's all subjective and depends on what you want.
