Probably just normal year-to-year variation, but I'm surprised Des Moines made the list for 100k+ cities but not Billings or Fargo.

Many are surprising than most people perceive.

Pennsylvania is actually one of the snowiest states in the nation. Receiving both major Great Lake snowfall (Yes Lake Erie, is named after the Pennsylvania city) and Noreasters.

With that the official snowiest cities so far of 2020 - 2021 Winter Season are the following:

1) Worcester, Massachusetts
2) Erie, Pennsylvania
3) Buffalo, New York
4) Syracuse, New York
5) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
6). Des Moines, Iowa
7). Allentown, Pennsylvania
8). Anchorage, Alaska
9). Minneapolis, Minnesota
10). Spokane, Washington

Pennsylvania sees more snow than any other state of cities larger than 100k.
I always find these fun since most people don't associate Arizona with snow. Flagstaff is only around 72K people, a bit under your 100K cut off but it's metro area pushes it over 100K. But on average Flagstaff can be one of the snowiest cities in the US. The data below is on the 2018-2019 season, this year being El Nino has been a below average snow year in the southwest.

The ten snowiest cities in the United States are:
  1. Caribou, ME
  2. Sault Ste. Marie, MI
  3. Flagstaff, AZ
  4. Buffalo, NY
  5. Syracuse, NY
  6. Burlington, VT
  7. Duluth, MN
  8. Erie, PA
  9. Rochester, NY
  10. Nome, AK

We've had zero inches of snow this year in Miami.

Just an update.

Here are the official snow totals to reference Snowiest Cities over 100k for the 2020 - 2021 Winter Season.

https://goldensnowglobe.com/current-...owiest-cities/

The top 10 break down:

1) Pennsylvania : 3
2) New York: 2
3) Massachusettes: 1
3) Iowa: 1
4) Alaska: 1
5) Minnesota: 1
6) Washington: 1

Syracuse most definitely gets a lot of snow. I think though Erie is often under the radar. It typically receives more snow than Syracuse every winter. Both are virtually neck and neck for the same snow totals.

I ski. I really only care about snowfall at ski resorts. In Vermont, Killington where I am is 144" so far. Jay Peak 177" with less thaws/rain than Killington. Stowe 121". Wildcat NH 77". Vail CO 122". Snowbird UT 193". It's all about microclimates.

Good point above. Microclimates definitely see larger totals.

I think the idea behind cities is that it reflects a relatively large area, so it affects day to day activities in a much more impactful way.

Rather than focusing on small towns, focusing on the cities, in all, affects more people.

Your last sentence makes a very good point, as there are small towns north of Syracuse where they might get some ridiculous snowfall totals. This article illustrates this and many of the places mentioned aren't even an hour away from Syracuse and one of the towns is actually in the metro area: https://www.ithacajournal.com/story/...ue/2604377002/ Great if you like to snowmobile, which is big up that way or ski though.

Note how Des Moines is surpassing Minneapolis this year. This is HIGHLY unusual. Most of the major storms are on eastward paths hundreds of miles south of where they usually go. Des Moines gets snowier, Minneapolis just gets colder!
