Hi all!

Out of Chicago, Atlanta, San Diego, LA and Seattle, what city do you think would be best for an early 20s, heterosexual African American female?

Most interested in:
- Diverse, liberal population
- Good dating prospects for those looking to settle down
- Somewhat affordable rental prices (Can get an updated studio/1BD for under $1400)
- Things to do/nightlife
- Low crime rates

I'm coming from D.C., and while the city is a good place to start a career and it's diverse, that's about it. COL is very high, people are too busy or transient to date and there's not many other industries besides government. I work in entertainment so a place with jobs for film/TV workers is ideal. I have lived in LA for a short period and it's a nice city but overpopulated and hard to get a job - possibly easier now since I have my foot in the door, but a fresh start may be nice!

Thanks for the help

Chicago or Atlanta.

Strong no to Seattle.

Seattle or San Diego.

Better male to female ratio for women. And better dating prospects and dating variety for Black women.

Since you are in entertainment, Atlanta also worked.

Thus, Chicago is the no.

I’d say easily Atlanta or LA, though I don’t know how easy you could get a place in LA within that budget. Seattle... replace government with tech... not a great place if you aren’t into tech bros. We have basically no entertainment industry in Seattle.

BTW, I should also mention, San Diego has beautiful weather/scenery but it's a lot more military and tourist-oriented. Black people also only make up 5% of the metro area population.

As far as Seattle, Bluefox summed it up perfectly. It's lacking in many black people as well.

As far as entertainment, Chicago is also pretty big if you're interested in work for theater / stage plays.

Los Angeles isn't a bad choice, but it's considerably more expensive than even DC.

If you think the COL in DC is high, you’ll want to avoid LA, SD and Seattle. They are all considerably more expensive than DC.

Atlanta, of the list, seems to be the best fit for you. You might even want to consider Charlotte or Tampa.

Chicago or Atlanta. The rest is out of budget. Both Chicago and Atlanta will have enough opportunities and is diverse enough.

LA is still expensive, but many new Hollywood types live in the slightly cheaper san Fernando Valley nearer to the east. Where many studios are located .burbak, universal, studio city are but more suburban. Whileyoung singles who want to network live in West Hollywood, Fairfax, area. Even Hollywood. But not cheap but walkable, cafes, shops, etc.
Much easier in your budget to get a roommate situation where $3000 $1500 each can get you a nicer spacious place in a modern apartment. But a studio is hard and probably older buildings.

SD metro is 6.7% black and LA metro is 7% black. Not really sure that's a big difference. LA may have a larger critical mass (and more black professionals), but I think the city has a terrible legacy for how black people are treated. One of the worst outside the south.

Personally I wouldn't recommend either.
