Which is better for a safe, walkable, place to live with a bit of a cosmopolitan feel, a good downtown "core", aesthetically pleasing, lots of greenery (street trees, parks), and near to other towns/cities that have things to do? Public transit is a plus.
These are all comparable, though Charlottesville is not in the DC metro like the others.
That's exactly what I was thinking, though technically Annapolis is in the Baltimore Metro.
The three that aren't Charlottesville definitely have a much different overall context.

Annapolis. All the water surrounding it, the architecture, the Naval Academy, everything about it. Just a beautiful setting. I feel very Patriotic when I'm there too.
Alexandria is way more cosmopolitan and walkable than the others.
Annapolis has small Asian and Latin populations, Anne Arundel County is very white or black with little in between. It's quaint, but not cosmopolitan in spite of its proximity to DC.
Frederick gets a little more benefit due to proximity to Montgomery County but it also near some very backwards places, hence its nickname "Fredneck".

I'm planning a road trip to the South in the Fall and I want to make a stop and spend some time in VA or MD on the way back, but not in the DC/Beltway area. Thinking either Charlottesville or Annapolis (or possibly Harpers Ferry). I know C'ville and Annapolis are very different experiences, but I haven't been to either. Leaning Annapolis for the waterfront and seafood, but I have not spent time in the hills/mountains south of PA. I welcome any recommendations, finding it hard to decide.
