MA cities are hampered by Puritan MA. There's the minimal ability for nightlife, public spaces etc. It's just a siloed environment outside of porches in your neighborhood. Nothing lively whatsoever-all you've got is your ethnic background your neighborhood and service and healthcare jobs.

On weekends the few places close at 1 am, no street vendors, no buskers, no nothing. In Lawrence where there are tons of Dominicans and they love hookah, they used to have a hookah bar culture until the city got rid of it-little things like that happen all the time. Springfield Club Quarter got gutted by Springfield PD (heard they had what amounted to a vice squad) and the city apparently didn't want competition with the new Casino. That's what makes them uninspiring places to be. Very different than 4 am closes and civic pride in NY State.

Is Rochester really a disaster? a lot of the random street views I see show a city like Milwaukee. Kind of looks like Hyde Park. Seems like there could be disaster areas but most of this city looks good.

It's pretty bad. It's definitely worse than Worcester and Fall River. Without a doubt.

Buffalo and Albany are my favorite of the upstate cities

Rochester looks nice on streetviewer. I've heard the north side is rough but a lot of the streets look well maintained and quiet. compared to Springfield, MA, the city looks a lot nicer. The violent crime is lower overall but homicides are higher in Rochester.

looks decent compared to buffalo, which only has a slightly higher homicide rate than rochester

See, this is different from Upstate NY where you have nightlife quarters like West Chippewa street, Allentown and Elmwood Village in Buffalo; East End, Park Avenue and SouthWedge in Rochester; Armory Square, Hanover Square and even Westcott Street in Syracuse; Lark Street in Albany, Downtown Troy, Downtown Schenectady, Varick Street in Utica, State Street in Binghamton, Ithaca Commons/Downtown Ithaca, etc. All except for Ithaca(1 am) have at least a 2 am last call. Albany and Buffalo areas goes until 4. Rochester, Syracuse and Utica areas it is 2. Binghamton I believe is 3.

Some places may come and go, but in usual times, there is some activity during much of the week between restaurants, bars, clubs and live music.

I wonder if this contributes to the fact that many MA cities have high crime with low homicide rates.

Many homicides happen in or around nightclubs so if people are just sitting home because there is noplace to go in town or working 24/7 to afford the rent they don't have time to go out and run into people they have issues with. Obviously forcing people into a boring lifestyle isn't the best way to accomplish this, but it's something I've thought about before.
