Its an international gateway and a major hub of influence. No it does not have the most elite economy whatsoever, but it has a long list of elite individuals who have some form of residence there even if just part time and many who are international and not American.
Expensive, international, glamour, and exciting. It's a destination for elite people in the Western Hemisphere. I dont think you can have coastal elite without Miami.

That was my initial thought, unless he was referring to coastal elites from other US cities (and other countries) who have relocated here in recent years?...though Palm Beach and sections of Miami Beach and the mainland have their elites as measured by wealth and possessions and influence amongst large swaths of the US Hispanic community via Spanish media (Telemundo, Univision studios in Doral, etc).

What about Miami isnt elite?
Ok, was just an honest question. That's a decent explanation, although I don't think the locals in Miami would consider themselves "elites".
I don't get "elite" vibes from Philly. That's probably why it's amongst my favorite big cities.
Its elite vibe is concentrated within pockets of the city and many of its historic social clubs (The Union League) and it is strongly felt in its Main Line suburbs.
But overall the city has a down to earth feel. Which is nice. Quakerism is very much built into the city, which I love.

The main thing elite about Miami I think of is fashion, and maybe hotels/hospitality. Outside of that it doesn't strike me as the locals being "coastal elites". It is however an expensive city with lots of tourism.

None of the locals in these places are elite. Maybe SF or San Jose. THat seems like a really flimsy argument against Miami. Would we consider Sully from Southie elite?
Boston is the definition of Old Money. So obviously them as #1.
New York came through later on with their big money. So them there.
Maybe Philadelphia.
But yeah, Boston and New York for me. Maybe Newport too
Mor of Philadelphia's money and wealth seems tied to Old Money than Boston-which has more new money in the mix.
I also don't think there's proof NYC came through later with their big money. Its always been a major trading port and financial center from the git-go. Even before Alexander Hamilton...
