I'm guessing people who grew up and live in the west coast and have little knowledge of the east coast.

The Northeast US votes (especially New England) probably result from preferences regarding varied topography (cliffs, hills, etc) right beside the beachfront, a juxtaposition that is quite absent in the Southeastern US.

In the Southeast outside of Florida, the Sea Islands bight region from southern NC down to northeastern FL also presents an interesting choice. The tidal ranges are large, and the coast has very low wave energy, resulting in the creation of very wide barrier islands w/ little overwash - combine that with lack of development, and you end up with decent intact tracts of subtropical evergreen maritime forest. Some of these developed ones in Hunting Island, Cumberland Island, etc literally look like Jurassic Park.

Start laughing. I really like St. Augustine. I like Cape May, NJ, and the Outer Banks, too.

I get the cliffs but is anyone hanging out there during the fall and winter? That cuts off over half the year.
