In addition, apparently a 51 year old man went missing and likely got shot on 31st of December: article in Mlive. So, 56 homicides gives a rate of 58.6.

A homicide rate of 58.6 is nothing to write home about but 63.1 seems a bit too high.
I saw that link but it only went through December 27. I double checked and this article put the homicide count at 61 for the whole year:

Thanks, I hadn't seen that article yet. It also provides some insight in what is going on in Flint. The difference in the rate seems to come from the article counting all homicides and I was only counting murders. Anyway, it was a bad year for Flint. Hopefully things will get better soon.

Crazy how St Louis has overtaken the top spot comfortably but Louisiana as a state is still way ahead of Missouri to stay as the murder cap

I think if we can consider cities in Puerto Rico (kind of our Quebec), then San Juan is probably second or third after STL and maybe Baltimore, and most likely at least one smaller city that's up there with East.St Louis. The territory had 529 murders or a rate of 16.5/100k in 2020 for reference. That's a decline from 2019 of 614. It's crazy to think we can actually consider some mainland US cities(and even a state or two) to be comparable in violence to a place that is almost third world(yet, it's part of America) with poverty rates twice as high as Mississippi.
