Of the 10 largest cities in the USA, which is most struggling to find and maintain its identity?

Cities like NYC and Philly almost certainly have an identity tied to them, but others not so much.

San Jose easily. I don;t know if its a suburban version of Sf.. or doing its on thing.. or what not. I still cant fully comprehend what San Jose actually is or what it would be without tech.

Phoenix has always been oriented toward attracting conservative white retirees and catering to the lifestyle they want, and yet it's also now starting to attract tech companies (relocating from CA) and getting pretty aggressive with expanding its light rail, building more density, and adding bike lanes. And parts of the inner city do have a lot of poverty and crime. The Phoenix area as a result has a pretty weird vibe.

I picked San Jose also. I think when many people (particularly people who don't live on the West Coast) hear San Jose, they think of it as a suburb of something. They can't figure out exactly what it's a suburb of, but they don't really think of it as a major city in its own rite.

i say Portland, OR
What an effing nightmare.
San Jose is just fine. They know who they are, and don't care much about
towers, and iconic street walls. They wear tee shirts to work.
They're happy to invent ultra high end techy stuff, and sell it to you,
and rake in a fortune with their stock options,
They run the crypto market while sipping latte.
They retire in Park City, UT, and Jackson, WY.
They done just bought up 3/4 of Montana, Wyoming, North Arizona and Utah.
i could say more but..........

I agree. But it has that. What exactly does the city of Phoenix have that we can associate? Cacti?
