In terms of suburban/outer communities that are sleepers within each area that could appeal to those that want walkability and some shops/things to do/places to go to, I’d say for the Syracuse area, Liverpool comes to mind: Home
https://liverpoolchamber.com/
https://www.onondagacountyparks.com/...aga-lake-park/

In the Rochester area, Brockport: https://www.brockportny.org/
https://www.brockport.edu/

In the Buffalo area, Hamburg: https://www.villagehamburg.com/
https://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/...rhood/hamburg/

There are other villages in each of these areas that could appeal to those that want walkability as well.

In the context of the thread, obviously New England. The OP said that he/she was from New England, and the post you quoted was a response to the OP

Something that is related to some of the criteria, that may be something of interest is that all 3 have colleges/universities that participate in housing programs. Here is one for employees at the University at Buffalo: UB H.O.M.E. Program - Administrative Services Gateway - University at Buffalo
https://nwcpbuffalo.org/home-buying-...-home-program/

Canisius College in Buffalo has a program for faculty members: file://hd.ad.syr.edu/02/c05671/Documents/Downloads/Faculty%20Benefits%20Overview.pdf

University of Rochester's program: https://www.rochester.edu/human-reso...credit%20union

Rochester Institute of Technology is a part of that same program, as are some other employers in the city: https://www.rit.edu/fa/humanresource...ship_Flyer.pdf

https://www.cityofrochester.gov/employerassisted.aspx

Syracuse University's program(includes much of Downtown): https://www.cityofrochester.gov/employerassisted.aspx

Le Moyne College's (Syracuse) program: https://echo.lemoyne.edu/DesktopModu...lId=0&TabId=99

Some other housing programs in the Buffalo and Syracuse areas: https://www.homehq.org/homeowner-loans-grants

If you are into the outdoors, here are a couple things that are closer to Syracuse than the other cities: https://visit1000islands.com/ (about an hour and a half)
https://www.newyorkupstate.com/thous...0_islands.html

Old Forge New York in the Adirondacks | McCauley Mountain Ski | Water Park | Cruises | Lodging | Museums | Hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, boating, snowmobiling (Again, about an hour and a half-45 minutes)

This is a fantastic thread. Thank you all for the tremendous amount of information. I'm in the early stages of considering a move to upstate NY. Upstate doesn't get enough credit for its natural beauty. And while I swore I would never consider living upstate after college, life has a funny way of making you eat your words. Merci.
