This is a fantastic thread. Thank you all for the tremendous amount of information. I'm in the early stages of considering a move to upstate NY. Upstate doesn't get enough credit for its natural beauty. And while I swore I would never consider living upstate after college, life has a funny way of making you eat your words. Merci.
^No problem...Just to add, Buffalo and Rochester are 2 and 3 in terms of city population in NY State. Syracuse is 5th. All are top 90-100 nationally in metro, urban area and CSA population. All were top 50 nationally in city proper population for a long period of their existence. So, even now, they all have the institutions that Legacy Cities generally have.
As mentioned in other threads in the past, the Buffalo and Rochester metro areas combined would be smaller in land area than many metros that have a similar population as one of those metros. To put this into perspective, I believe the Nashville metro area in land area is bigger than all 3 of these metro areas combined and has 2/3rds the population. So, that can give some idea of how close these cities are to each other. Let alone proximity to major Northeastern and eastern Canadian cities.

Once again, thank you so much ckhthankgod for your insights on upstate. Moving to Buffalo or Rochester maybe a better transition from NYC given their 2 and 3 respective rankings. However, having lived in Syracuse for 3 years back in the early 90s and taking weekend trips to the Fingerlakes, familiarity with the city may be a dealbreaker for me.
I will will take a series of weekend trips upstate this summer and winter to all three cities to learn more. Thanks again!

I will say that Syracuse in the early 90’s, wasn’t as active in its Downtown as it now at night. There were more people in the city, but there has been quite a bit of construction since then. Same for Buffalo and Rochester as well.
I would encourage trips to all 3 and check out some things that may be of interest to you in each of them. For instance, all of them have an art scene, plenty of festivals, sporting events, etc. during both of those seasons. I will also say that the best time of year may actually be Fall in Upstate NY due to the foliage and quite a bit is going on during the season.

Ohh yeah. My friend works at Moes part time ($16 an hour) and lives in Downtown Syracuse and has his own bed/bath. $450 a month.
He is also at SU grad. But still, very doable in SYR
Does he have a roommate? You can find some relatively affordable apartments Downtown, but they can go quickly and if he doesn’t have a roommate, that is a steal.
Related to housing, this is the National Association of Home Builders Housing Opportunity Index information, with this list in particular being a complete list of affordability rank for the 1st Quarter of 2021: https://www.nahb.org/-/media/NAHB/ne...nk-2021q1.xlsx

Yeah hes 3 roommates in a home in a decent part of SYR. I dont know where exactly.. going to visit him in late summer and go to the bars and all.. but all I know is he is content

If I think it is in the neighborhoods I think they are in, both have been mentioned and have some places to check out. Another area that comes to mind is walking distance to spots Downtown.
Even for those that don’t want roommates, you can find some solid, affordable apartments in solid to nice parts of town.
There are also food trails, which markets aspects of the food scene in these cities/areas, as well as others in Upstate NY: https://www.upstateeatstrail.com/
Some places in Syracuse that I know that have been highlighted on national shows in the past(Man vs. Food; Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, etc.) are: Home | Byblos Mediterranean Cafe
Another thing is that each area has their own things like hot dogs for instance. Buffalo is about Sahlen's; Rochester has Zweigle's and in Syracuse, Hofmann's is a local brand. So, you may get a preference based upon who makes them, as those companies are based in those areas. Let alone local favorite's like Loganberry Drink, Beef on Weck and Wings in Buffalo; the Garbage Plate in Rochester or Salt Potatoes in Syracuse.
