There actually are not very many of these. They have to be in-state, and they have to be long standing rivalries. Yep there are some that are right on the border but not in the same state, good for a mention for sure but they don't really meet the criteria.

I could think of these as the best:

Yankees vs Mets (NY)
Dodgers vs Giants (CA)
Cubs vs White Sox (IL)
Flyers vs Penguins (PA)
Rangers vs Islanders (NY)
Heat vs Magic (FLA)
Phillies vs Pirates (PA)
Steelers vs Eagles (PA)
Lakers vs Clippers (CA)
Cardinals vs Royals (MO)
Rangers vs Astros (TX)
Browns vs Bengals (OH)
Lightning vs Panthers (FLA)
Reds vs Indians (OH)
Jaguars vs Dolphins (FLA)

I'm missing some for sure, but which are your top five in-state rivalries?

It certainly is close, but its just in more than one state. Which by default makes it win

Interesting to think about this one, considering the Pirates haven't been very competitive in many years. I wish their general manager and front office could make them competitive again, since their fans have suffered and dropped the ball(their front office) for so many years.

I think back in the day before their move to Nashville, Oilers vs. Cowboys was an interesting NFL rivalry at times. Nowadays, it's the Texans and not the Oilers in Houston, as that former team has become the Titans.

Makes me wonder, was the Bills and Giants ever a big NFL rivalry at one time? Wouldn't be surprised, if at timed it became an interesting in state rivalry.

Some of those above aren't very good rivalries because the teams don't meet often enough
(Cubs / White Sox, Steelers / Eagles, etc.). Browns & Bengals do, so that's a good rivalry.

Here are two others:

Rams vs 49ers.

Chargers vs Raiders (until the Raiders moved... they're not quite in CA any more).

Yeah but Rams have not been in CA a lot of the time either -- I was only going with long standing in-state stuff. If they move around to other states, that breaks it. And I agree Raiders Chargers would have been good but since moving-- it doesn't fit, frustrating to the fans that they keep moving some of the teams I'm sure

Dodgers vs Giants

Rams vs. Niners would be a lot stronger if the Rams hadn't left for 20 years. I'm a Niner fan and our fan base seems much bigger, we owned the LA Coliseum before COVID, we'll see what happens at SoFi.

Only rivalry for the Pirates and Phillies is making the playoffs as neither can do it in recent years.

In all honesty, Steelers vs Eagles isn't that much of a rivalry either. When we played last season, it was the media who kept trying to hyping it up as the 'Keystone Battle' when in actuality the fans treated it as another game. I'm sure if it happened in the playoffs, it'd be a different story.

The Penguins and Flyers is definitely the strongest rivalry in PA and probably all of hockey.
