For people with unrefined tastes (the majority) Vegas offers about the same as NYC for cheaper. Of course, anyone who is even remotely cultured knows that there’s so much more to NYC than the Statute of Liberty, Times Square, etc. But I do think a very large percentage of Americans have absolutely no interest in even learning what NYC has to offer. And that is NOT a knock against New York, but rather our culture as a whole. We on this forum know pretty well what NYC is but I honestly think a lot of people have no clue, or they do and don’t appreciate it. For those people, Vegas actually does compete with NYC. There’s a reason why places like Vegas and Orlando get such high tourism numbers - they appeal to the masses. Who wants to go to a world class city when you can go to Disney or Caesar’s Palace instead?

I understand, yet the argument could be made that people that think that seeing a play, listening to an international artist, or eating at a Michelin rated restaurant is somehow better just by being in NYC are the truly unrefined.
These are two of the most visited cities in the US. Which city do you think offers more for tourists? (In terms of both quantity and quality of tourist attractions)

Las Vegas offers the best in pools, crazy nightlife and 24 hour marriages (No lie.. i literally know two people who got married in Vegas.. thats awesome tho), casinos and buffets.
New York to everything else.
Its not a BLOWOUT, but Las Vegas holds its weight. But NYC wins.
New York is in another league altogether... Vegas is a weekend party town that I can't wait to get out of after a few days... New York is a cultural/nightlife/restaurant/neighborhood paradise that I could explore endlessly... Central Park and the few streets and avenues that straddle it offer more than all of Las Vegas, let alone the entire city of New York...loool..

You’re ignoring the massive size differential between NYC and Vegas. The New York metro area is what, 9 times the population of the Vegas metro area? Vegas is a total juggernaut in that regard. And that’s by design.
Vegas offers a unique, truly theme park vibe, with the resorts, etc. It's a feel that, while New York City has a lot more offerings in many many many ways, Vegas would be the preferred choice of a fair amount of the people due in part to the fact it (along the strip) largely ceases to be a city, and is more, adult theme park in the truest sense anywhere.
Vegas also does perhaps offer more to someone looking for an outdoors vacation, or perhaps even someone with random interest in manmade attractions: 40 mins to Hoover Dam, a little over an hour to Area 51, 50 mins to Ivanpah Solar Facility, 20 mins to Red Rock Canyon, 45 mins to Mount Charleston, 45 mins to Valley of Fire, 30 mins to Lake Mead NRA, 2.5 hrs. to Lake Havasu City (London Bridge), 2.5 hrs. to Zion NP, 2 hrs. to Grand Canyon West/Skywalk, 1 hr to Mojave National Preserve, 2 hrs. to Death Valley NP 3 hrs. to Joshua Tree NP... et al.
Anyways, this is a city based forum, and it is obvious why this is lopsided here because we are talking about the cities themselves, and IMO Las Vegas is almost the least city, city there is. But, that being said, I think if taking a 30,000 ft. view.. this would be much closer to evenly matched if asking most Americans which they would find offers more for them on a visit, esp. when factoring in the natural area equation here. With that being said, I actually prefer the Appalachians and eastern, leafy brand of nature generally speaking. But I won't deny Grand Canyon and Zion are global destinations, all the same.
