I feel like this strengthens the other person's argument.
No, folks don't visit NYC for the surrounding nature. I would never go to the Berkshires or the Catskills unless I lived in NYC. Vegas, on the other hand, can be a draw for tourists as a launching point for one who wants to day trip to places like the Grand Canyon or Zion.
This is why if I'm going on vacation to a city that I can use as a home base while exploring the surrounding areas for outdoor recreation, I would pick Vegas over NYC. Obviously, NYC dominates in every other category, but definitely not in outdoor adventures.
If you love and want some gambling, drinking and outdoor adventures, you might choose Vegas.
If you love and want a huge cosmopolitan urban experience with world class food and drink, cultural diversity, museums, and vast neighborhood experience options, NYC is a great pick.
In my opinion, Vegas is a great choice for 1 or 2 times to experience (unless you live for gambling).
NYC on the other hand, is less limiting of a trip and keeps you coming back more and more to experience everything again, and what you missed.
While NYC and NY state is one of the top places to relocate from and NYC having a very very high crime rate recently which would make a tourist think twice about visiting and not to mention how expensive it can be for a visitor.
As far as natural beauty and things to do, see my response on post above
Just made it out to Las Vegas (first time) it was 100 degrees at 4am!! .ITS HOTTTTTER THAN A ......... ,. But I'm Not sweating, Is This the Dry Heat Everybody was talking about?
Anyways I don't want to pass judgment on the 1st day I visit a place , but I can tell my first impressions of Vegas
You Guys are Right, This is No New York, This is closer in stature and more on a Level with New Orleans minus all the history
There is Nice Architecture Big Flashy LED Screens Street Entertainers Good Eating Corky Attractions People Sleeping on the sidewalks and overhead crosswalks, guess that's to be expected in a tourist town.
But yes I visit New York in the past and Vegas Is not the scale New York is but that doesn't mean it can't be fun

I mean Vegas is as advertise...you know what your getting when you visit Vegas. In my opinion how I view Vegas is it's Disney world for Adults. I'm not going to Vegas for a "CITY" experience I'm going for an entertainment overload experience and Vegas gives me that and much more. That's why I love going to Vegas for 3 days and I'm good. NYC is a cultural city experience. And you never know what your gonna get with that. I love to visit these cities for 2 completely different reasons.
Las vegas is really only fun for adults who like to gamble & party, otherwise it's boring. My parents brought me for my 18th birthday and my sister was 16. It was mostly a trip for them. The pool @ the hotel was fun and we saw cirque du soleil shows but other than that, it was kind of boring.
NYC has a large variety of things to do for kids & families. It also provides easy access to many beaches, can't get that in Vegas. As far as hiking, sure Vegas wins on that, but most kids don't want to hike - especially in the heat.
NYC wins out b/c of variety on all accounts (plus I'm a lil biased also b/c it's my home city)

I Meant Quirky Attractions not Corky attractions in earlier post, Vegas was Cool Yeah like Entertainment Overload, Checked out The Bellagio Water show, Erupting Volcano and High Roller ferris wheel etc, also checked out the New York New York Casino since this thread is About New York lol, but didn't get a chance to ride the roller coaster there
I'm not a gambler, I didn't gamble not one time in Vegas, but still had a pretty nice time.even though they had Slot Machines at Gas Stations some fast food restaurants the Airport etc
Missed out on some Magic Shows, The Stratosphere, AdventureDome at Circus Circus, where the tour guide said you can drive a tank and run over cars etc, but I don't know if that's true
But did get a chance to check out Old Vegas and Freemont street, Which is important because I Always like to see A City away from it's tourist attractions and See the Real Version of the City, Where the Locals work and play
I would rank Las Vegas Slightly. Just a little bit, above New Orleans, in Things to do, but not by much because both are awesome doing the tourist thing
Vegas doesn't match NYs scale but Vegas probably outdoes every other major city in the Tourist Trade
