Are you talking city proper or metro? There is a substantial East Asian population in Northern Virginia (e.g. Fairfax County). There's also a smaller but still noticeable one in Central Maryland, especially Howard County. Granted, HoCo is considered part of the Baltimore metro area, but I could see considering it part of the DC area as well.

A good indication of greater east Asia is the part of Asia that has significant Chinese populations. Chinese are either the majority or the largest minority of all east and southeast asian nations. Chinese immigrants have played a critical role in many countries' development and are often part of the elite class with significant economic, social, and political power. Chinese diaspora ranking by total population:
1. Thailand
2. Malaysia

3. USA
4. Indonesia
5. Singapore

6. Canada
7. Myanmar
8. Philippines

9. Australia
10. South Korea
11. Japan
12. Vietnam

One-quarter of Malaysians, three-fourths of Singaporeans, and one in six Thai are ethnically Chinese. Almost every major country in east and southeast Asia have a prominent Chinese population.

San Diego: 11% Asian

These are 2010 numbers but likely haven't changed dramatically.
Where are you getting your data? Are you comparing cities or regions?
2010 Asian Population % of region
  • San Diego: 10.9%
  • NYC: 9.9%
2010 Asian Population % of city
  • San Diego: 15.9%
  • NYC: 12.7%
San Diego's (city) Asian population will be close to 17% of the city population (of 1.42M). New York City is close to 14%.

9.0% of San Diego MSA population is an immigrant from Asia. 8.7% for NYC MSA.

As you noted, both regions have different concentrations. However, for the purposes of this thread with the definition of "East Asia" as including SE Asia and excluding South Asia, I think San Diego wins this for sure. NYC's asian population and diversity has a significant south asian population, whereas San Diego has a significant southeast asian population.

Perhaps I'll also give the edge to San Diego because our current mayor is part-Filipino

Criteria:

1. High population.
2. Diversity. High population matters but it should also be diverse and have some of different nationalities.
3. Amenities. Is there a decent Chinatown/Viet town/Koreatoen etc? How good is the food? Asian specific nightlife spots? Perhaps one of the Asia society centers in America?
4. Well integrated and made its mark in the community?

My take:

LA
SF
NYC
Seattle
DC
Houston
Chicago
Dallas
Boston
Atlanta
Philly

I’m honestly struggling to decide where San Diego and Vegas goes in this list.

I personally wanted to bump seattle down a bit because the amenities seem to come up short compared to its population, but you can’t argue with their population and how big of a mark they have
I'd say that San Diego is either tied with NYC or slightly below. Definitely higher than Seattle. San Diego has a diverse and large southeast Asian population compared to Seattle and NYC. Not to mention our current mayor is part-Filipino.

Seattle was be higher by metro or county per the 2018 ACS. San Diego by city-of.

SD metro was 12.0% vs. 14.0% for Seattle in the one-race category.

SD County was 12.0% Asian and King County 17.9%.

By city-of, SD was 16.9% vs. 15.5% for Seattle.

Seattle’s metro area is not that high in terms of East Asian population compared to most places on the West Coast. But Im not sure what you mean about amenities. Aside from SF and LA Seattle has probably the best Chinatown and other Asian enclaves on the West Coast. And it has a diverse Asian population including high relatively high percentages of Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese and Japanese.

Boston feels and I think is more *East* Asian in the city and metro places like Acton Lexington Quincy Chinatown Brookline Sharon and Cambridge are all very Chinese East Asian with some Koreans.the Vietnamese and Cambodians are more predominated in Dorchester Randolph Lowell Lynn Revere..

Dc feels more South and West Asian

Data was from the 2010 Census and it was regional. Looks like SD city has a higher concentration of Asian Americans.

Someone brought up, Honolulu but since then I haven’t heard it mentioned in this thread. In all Homesty, Honolulu is top 5 in the U.S, probably too 3. I don’t know how it would stack up against LA and SF. But pretty sure it has the largest Japanese population, One of the largest Filipino, and easily the highest proportion of mixed Asians in the U.S.
