I've heard/read comparisons between the downtown's of Austin, Charlotte and Nashville. Which in your opinion is more similar to Austin based on number of persons living downtown, amenities, cultural offerings, public transportation, overall built environment?
Much more like Nashville's. Lively, lots of partygoers and live music. Uptown Charlotte is much, much quieter in comparison.
Uptown is not quiet or empty AT ALL Wednesday night through Sunday night. It's quite the opposite. If you combine Uptown with SouthEnd and the music factory on the north side I think it beats both... For that reason I think Nashville and Austin are more alike because everything is concentrated downtown where as Charlotte has reached a growth point where activities have reached into multiple connecting neighborhoods to Uptown. Not to mention the light rail and street car that run through center city plus the compactness and the multiple sports arenas in Uptown. Not to mention all of those skyscrapers...its just a different effect

Hasn't Austin’s activities expanded beyond downtown as well?

..Austin has more 100m skyscraper than Charlotte let alone Nashville, lol.
That being said, Austin is more similar to Nashville than Charlotte in terms of architecture, layout and on the ground feel.

I haven't been to any of them recently and Austin not at all. But in the interest of generating discussion that extends beyond bars, here is my ranking for just downtown.

And they are not as tall or at all as concentrated as Charlotte's in its core center city area.... Charlotte wins in infrastructure, skyline, transportation, economy, etc... and can go toe to toe and maybe even beat them both when it comes to entertainment and nightlife...I suggest you guys visit on a Saturday night or during one of the multiple sporting events..100 meter buildings don't make u big leagues. My point was that because of Cbarlotte canyon affect with its concentrated skyline and the large amount of activities across multiple areas along with the added element of streetcars and lightrail it just adds a " big city" feel that the other 2 don't have yet...
