My opinion-

Culture: Chicago. Much more diverse. DC has too much fragmentation in the culture here. Chicago has greater city pride & a more cohesive culture.
Public School Systems (for those with children): No idea
Economy: Chicago (Again, a more diverse economy that isn't anchored by the Federal Government or any one industry).
Food: DC wins on Ethiopian, Salvadoran, French & Seafood. Chicago wins on everything else. Food also seems to be more reasonably priced.
Cost of living: Chicago
Crime: DC, in spite of the recent crime spikes taking place & some of the public safety issues as of late.
Infrastructure/transportation: Tie
Urbanity: DC
Desirable suburbs: DC
Climate: Chicago.

Both are great cities and are in my top 10 personally.

Chicago's really not more diverse than Washington.

Two of my least favorite US cities, but here we go...

Culture: DC
Public School Systems (for those with children): DC for sure
Economy: DC
Food: Chicago
Cost of living: Chicago
Crime: DC
Infrastructure/transportation: Tie
Urbanity: Chicago
Desirable suburbs: DC, barely
Climate: I prefer DC but this comes down to whether you can tolerate extreme heat or extreme cold better. Both climates are pretty junky.

Maybe not the MSA. But the city itself certainly is. Greater racial diversity, larger foreign born pop, more historic and contemporary immigrant enclaves.

This. A simple look at the Census figures is all you need to look at…

Look at Chicago's chinatown vs DC's chinatown. Chinatown chicago is "recognized as the only growing Chinatown in the country"

Go to DC's chinatown. All the culture has been stripped and replaced with chains. Probably the biggest example of gentrificatio destroying the culture of a neighborhood.

And actually Asians are the fastest growing demographic in Chicago. This, after Hispanics were the fastest growing demographic the previous decade. Chicago is diversifying quickly.

Yup, Chicago is quickly becoming a hub for Asian Americans. Lots of demographic shifts happening in the city. Latinos will become the #1 demographic in the city in a couple years (officially by the 2030 census), The asian population at this rate will definitely exceed over 10% soon. The white population is remaining steady.

The only worrying thing is Chicago's rapid black flight. They're the only demographic not growing in the city.
