New Jersey and Pennsylvania both lack CCDs, since they use Townships as their official Census data unit. Unfortunately, there are a bazillion townships in each state, so I opted to just pick the densest legislative districts in Chester/Burlington and call it a day - both of those counties have wildly low-density outer lands, so you have to be surgical with both.
PHOENIX - All CCDs are in Maricopa County except for North Pinal -
Chandler CCD - 456,843 - 173
Deer Valley CCD - 287,068 - 409
North Pinal CCD - 180,394 - 1,009
Phoenix CCD - 3,347,177 - 1,086
TOTAL POPULATION - 4,271,482 Land Area: 2,677
North Pinal CCD is 80% rural, so in reality, the number is closer to 4.4 million, as you could trade those 800 square miles of rural North Pinal for Buckeye, and parts of Central Pinal.
But Phoenix's urban form is essentially 0 or 3,000, which is to say, an area either has 3,000 people per square mile or it has near 0. There really is no rural transition. You either live in the urban area, or you live in nowhere. Case in point, the western part of Maricopa County has 215,537 people in 6,196 square miles, or 35 people per square mile. And 70,000 of those are in the Buckeye area. So you really are talking about 140,000 people living in a landmass the size of Maryland. And then there's a city of 4.3 million people that comes out of nowhere.
And that's all I'll post for today since it's bedtime. Up next are:

Similar to manitopiaaa post about Cincinnati and Dayton, the Harrisburg Pennsylvania MSA would have to combine another MSA to reach 2,500 square miles.
HARRISBURG-YORK
Counties:
Dauphin Cumberland Perry (Harrisburg MSA) + York (York MSA)
286,401+259,469+45,842+456,438 TOTAL POPULATION: 1,048,150
It's a huge mistake to look at LA County's physical size and think that it's therefore sprawlsville. Hardly. Most of the county is crowded on a basin right along the coast and nearby valleys.
Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim Urban Area 2010:
Population: 14,083,662
Area: 2,281 sq miles
Likewise, San Francisco fits nearly 5 million people in 800 sq miles as well.
San Francisco-Oakland Urban Area 2010: Population: 4,945,708
Area: 809 sq miles
If we add the San Jose Urban Area, we'd looking at the nation's 4th largest urban area.
San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose Urban Area 2010:
Population: 6,610,204
Area: 1,095 sq miles
Historically the SF MSA was separated into 4 Urban Area on account of the hills that separated the main urban area from the eastern suburbs. I'm guessing they added the other 3 with the main UA and then added Palo Alto other areas of the SJ UA to the SF UA-else why is the SF Urban Area more populated than the MSA?? That is definitely yet another sign that the MSA designation just does NOT fit this area at all.
San Antonio @ 2,500 square miles. San Antonio's primary and most populated counties are 3 out of the 8 component MSA. The other counties are large in land area but are the lesser populated counties of the metro area (2,658,754 Million)
Bexar 2,048,920/ 1248 Sq. Miles
Comal 172,345/ 575 Sq. Miles
Guadalupe 173,989/ 711 Sq. miles
San Antonio metro & U.A. population. Urbanized Area/nearly 2,100,000 within 579 Square mile area.
8 county metro area 2021 (2,658,754)
San Antonio primary metro components.
3 county area.
2,534 Sq. Miles

Pittsburgh
Portland
Saint Louis
Salt Lake City

Seattle
Tampa
Washington
I’d be interested in Raleigh if you don’t mind.

HARRISBURG-YORK

Dauphin Cumberland Perry (Harrisburg MSA) + York (York MSA)
286,401+259,469+45,842+456,438 TOTAL POPULATION: 1,048,150
558+550+551+911
Land Area: 2,570 square miles
Then if you were to add in Lancaster and Lebanon Counties, which are also strongly tied to Harrisburg, you would get
2,570 Square Miles + 944 Square Miles (Lancaster County) + 362 Square Miles (Lebanon County) = 3,876 Square Miles.
^ I realize the above is far above the 2,500 square mile metric for direct MSA comparison purposes, so this reply can be disregarded. I also didn't realize just how much of a beast Lancaster County is in terms of size! It is almost as big as Rhode Island!
I was just personally interested in seeing how large the Harrisburg/Lancaster/York area truly was. That area has the potential to become a CSA at some point in my lifetime as they continue to blend together, especially if new transit options can be established. I always wished the Harrisburg sub-forum on here could be expanded to the Harrisburg/Lancaster/York sub-forum, as it would be a lot more active.
manitopiaaa, thank you so much for starting this thread! As a Pittsburgher I am tempted to do Pittsburgh myself but am going to wait for when you wake up. I am excited!
Washington DC should be interesting as it’s MSA’s reach is massive (5,564.6 sq mi) where’s as Baltimore’s MSA is almost exactly 2,600 sq. miles with ~2.85 million people inside it
