I know i gave crap to Austin last post I wrote about it.

However.. Austin is significantly cheaper than SJ and wages are pretty even for my field. There is little redeeming about SJ to me. The most Overpriced generic suburbia? Yikes.
Austin anyday.

Austin, hands down. I lived there briefly and visit frequently. The city has changed a ton in the last 10 years, but it is really a great place overall.

Main issue with San Jose is it’s just too expensive, WAY too expensive, unjustifiable. If Austin and San Jose were equal cost though, it would be San Jose as a no-brainer.

I think Austin although to be fair I’ve never been to San Jose. My impression is that the native born American population is rapidly being displaced by Asian immigrants there but this may be way off base.

I've never been to Austin and have spent some time in the San Jose area, but not San Jose itself. My initial thought was Austin, but two things have changed my mind.

One is that I rate the Bay Area highly in general. Silicon Valley isn't my favorite part of the Bay Area, but it's still a really nice part of the country.

Second, and I mean no offense, but I've come across just a few UT grads through business and I don't know if they are typical, but they all seemed to have a very high opinion of Texas, specifically Austin, and especially UT. Their alma mater comes up in ways that rarely happen in other places and I think that it may be too much of a one college town in business relationships.

Well, San Jose is the only metro area on the US mainland wherein Asians are the largest racial group. That could be part of why I, a Pacific Islander, feel so at home here.

San Jose has more foreign born residents than any single racial group as well, which I am sure is also unique among all US Metros as well.

Austin is demographically much more typical of Texas and the Southwest as far as racial composition, I suppose.

There is no right or wrong answer btw, this is just how it is.

Austin Metro Area
51.5% White
32.5% Hispanic
6.8% Black
6.0% Asian
2.5% Multiracial
15.7% Foreign Born

San Jose Metro Area
36.4% Asian
30.5% White
26.1% Hispanic
3.6% Multiracial
2.3% Black
39.6% Foreign Born

As you can see, these 2 are very different from each other. San Jose is a very international metro area.

Housing data from the National Association of Realtors and income data from the US Census Bureau.

Median Home Price, Q1 2021
$1,187,214 Santa Clara County, CA
$456,690 Travis County, TX

Typical Monthly Mortgage Payment, Q1 2021
$4,505 Santa Clara County, TX
$1,733 Travis County, TX

Now this might seem daunting for the median household income in San Jose, and indeed it is...

Median Household Income:
$133,076 Santa Clara County, CA
$80,726 Travis County, TX

Remaining Median Household Income Minus 12-months of Mortgage Payments:
$79,016 Santa Clara County, CA
$59,930 Travis County, TX

Keep in mind this doesnt include property taxes, so...

As I've done in the past, I've looked at more precise data that looks at people actually more inclined to be in the market for a house, here is one example:

Median Income, Married Couple Family with Children Under Age 18
$200,942 Santa Clara County, CA
$128,241 Travis County, TX

TYPICAL ANNUAL MORTGAGE PAYMENTS
$54,060 Santa Clara County, CA
$20,796 Travis County, TX

MEDIAN INCOME REMAINING AFTER MORTGAGE PAYMENTS
$146,882 Santa Clara County, CA
$107,445 Travis County, TX

So this at least shows us that numbers actually can add up for the median family with kids, even if they are tight, but keep in mind a whole heck of a lot of people in the San Jose Metro earn way more than $200,000 as well.

So, food for thought.

The immigrants seem to leave the native whites alone. Don’t worry

For me, it's like picking your poison, lol. Austin is starting to adopt the same abysmally failed mindsets that San Jose has. They have a horrible homeless problem that Austin's Mayor refuses to acknowledge. I'll go with Austin since it's not as badly in the toilet as San Jose as of right now and is exponentially more affordable.
