I have never been to Sacramento and have heard mixed reviews. As per the 2020 census, it is handily outpacing the "lol stop moving here we're full" fan favorites:

Los Angles/Long Beach/Anaheim 2020: 13,200,998 2010: 12,828,837 % change-+2.9

San Francisco/Oakland/Berkeley 2020: 4,749,008. 2010: 4,335,391 % change-+9.54

San Diego/Carlsbad/Chula Vista. 2020: 3,298,634. 2010: 3,095,313. % change-+6.57

Sacramento/Roseville/Folsom. 2020: 2,397,382. 2010: 2,149,127. % change-+11.55

Sacramento is the #1 destination of people leaving the Bay Area, by far.

The question is, how independent as a metro is it? I need to visit. If the top thing is that its close to things like the Bay Area and Yosemite, then maybe I don't need to visit.

It's a decent city. It needs to infill more outside downtown/Midtown to grow into its current population. The Sac MSA is about the same size as the Portland MSA but (to me) feels much smaller.

It reminds me of a mid-size Midwestern city. The old town area and the history museum are solid.

It's fairly independent of the Bay Area because due to flooding on the west side of the rivers, most of the suburbs are east of downtown. But COVID is changing things a little as more Bay Area refugees head over there. CoL is much, much lower.

I am not surprised. While it will always be overshadowed by the Bay Area, and most Californians think it is a glorified Fresno, Sacramento is one of the most under-rated MSAs in the US. It is like Austin without the hype, and much better weather, and proximity to some of the most beautiful parts of the country and then the delta is a space of extraordinary haunting weirdness and beauty, both in terms of history and natural environs. That string of half abandoned Chinese-American Gold Rush towns along a river losing its way feel like southern Louisiana came to California and no-one knew what to do. . .

Fact-checking myself here to point out that I left off San Jose:

San Jose/Sunnyvale/Santa Clara. 2020: 2,000,468. 2010: 1,836,911 % change-+8.9

Grew up in Portland OR, spent a couple years in Sacramento. It felt like Portland with palm trees. (...well, like Portland used to be, but I won't get into THAT).

Not surprised. It's a nice city and not ridiculously expensive for no reason like the Bay or LA.

This will likely continue for the foreseeable future.

For good reason. You get to live in California at 70% the cost.
