Dallas/Ft. Worth-- TV show Dallas. More Texas than Texas, sprawl

Seattle-- Coffee, high tech, maybe rain and clouds, Asians

Chicago-- Business, architecture, the lakefront, museums

Atlanta-- CNN HQ, Civil Rights history (and, by association, African Americans)

Miami/Fort Lauderdale-- Cubans, beaches, hurricanes, alligators

Boston-- the Irish, higher ed., history, beans?

New York City-- neighborhoods/boroughs, Broadway, architecture, Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, 9/11, culture, diversity

Philadelphia-- Rocky, history

Los Angeles-- Hollywood, SoCal culture, celebs, glitz.

Houston-- NASA, hurricanes and floods, humidity

San Francisco/San Jose-- High tech, earthquakes, the bay and bridges, cable cars
Honest question... Do foreigners associate CNN with Atlanta? I figured most wouldn't know or would assume New York since everything else is there (including many CNN broadcasts).

CNN, like most national news nowadays, is heavily politics based. Their heavy hitter correspondents are based in DC and their bigshot anchors are based in New York. There's rarely anything that a casual observer would see that would let them know CNN is headquartered in Atlanta.

We are very headquarter heavy here on City data. The average American wouldn't be able to tell you what channel CNN is on, let alone where it is headquartered. A foreigner??? Forget about it.

I would put tech with San Francisco over Seattle.
And love them or hate them, Cheesesteaks are globally associated with Philadelphia. I've seen signs in parts of Europe and Asia advertising "Philly Steaks" (incorrect way of saying it).

Also surprised no one mentioned Rocky for Philadelphia. I can't stand the connection, but it is a thing...
Yeah three different things good encompass that into intellectualism/education. But I do know Europeans associate MA/NH (If they know about NH) with prep schools.

Seafood in NE is top tier, maybe not globally known. Because where is actually globally known for seafood since most of the world lives in/near/on a coast? Also, Some of the posts Im really lumping in coastal new England into this, since Boston is one of the few city identities that transpire way past its focal point. Today I met someone from VT who tried convincing me that he was "From Boston"... pone of maybe 2 or 3 cities where you get people associating their identities with the central city of their region, the others being Chicago and LA for some odd reason. Things outside city limits then get stuck in the perception of a city, whether its right or wrong.

Im doing the same for SF as encompassing most of Northern California. LA for the WHOLE Valley and many of the areas around, SoCal. Miami, just SoiFlo in general, NYC including LI, North Jersey etc... you get the jist.

Also for Philly, Philadelphia is the only city I havent heard brought up outside America so I wouldnt be entirely sure what people know about it. I would assume West Philadelphia Born and Raised is a pretty safe guess since it was a top show overseas for a good chunk of the 90s. Cheesteaks is a good one too.

I'd say The Wire, Star Spangled Banner, Babe Ruth for Washington DC/Baltimore.

Do foreigners—especially outside of North America—really know our national anthem is called The Star Spangled Banner (let alone where it originated) and/or associate specific cities with Civil Rights?….Americans would, but would someone in Australia, India, Europe, Brazil, etc know such details particularly if they are not applying for US citizenship?….Outside of Wall Street, Hollywood, Disneyland/Disneyworld, Silicon Valley, The White House, and a few other (Vegas Strip/gambling, South Beach??) —not dozens—not sure how much granular details of American culture most foreigners possess.

Some are old associations, others a bit more updated. Consider though that the average person around the world will very well know nothing about many of the cities.

Positive things known around the world about U.S. cities:

Washington D.C./Baltimore-- D.C. is known to everyone as the Capital of the United States and for the famous monuments there. But I don't think many overseas folks have any feeling at all about Baltimore, which doesn't have a lot to brag about anyway.

Dallas/Ft. Worth--Maybe the TV show Dallas? Cowboy history?

Seattle--Scenic beauty and tech. It could also tout its (historical) music scene...Hendrix, Cobain, et al.

Chicago--Where the skyscraper was invented, great architecture, where President Obama was from, and less charitably, gangsters--from the 1920s to now.

Atlanta--Like Baltimore, I don't think overseas folks think much about Atlanta at all, even after the Olympics there. Maybe some are aware of it as the home of CNN, but that's about it. Not much else to brag about to foreigners.

Miami/Fort Lauderdale--Nightlife, beaches, and partying. Miami Vice TV. And for Latin Americans, particularly, a major business center.

Boston--Its history and its status as a higher education Mecca, although average Joes around the world probably have little to no impression of Boston or care about Harvard or MIT.

New York City--Glamour, the U.S. center of the arts, Broadway, and big-time Wall Street finance. Also, sadly, the 9/11 attacks.

Philadelphia--As said above, maybe the Rocky Statue and maybe as the birthplace of the U.S.

Los Angeles--Movie, TV, and music powerhouse. Obviously.

Houston-- Big oil. But not much else to brag about overseas.

San Francisco/San Jose-- Scenic beauty, tech powerhouse, and quasi-European vibe,
