Calgary is sort of surprising. Everyone else is sort of expected. Really Canada west has a reputation for Oil and Gas, logging and agriculture rather than advanced industries.

Where the hell is Phoenix? It's absolutely booming and attracting the brightest.

Phoenix? I would think a dozen cities not listed would be there before Phoenix. There's no Atlanta, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Houston....

The brightest what?

I don't think I've seen Phoenix on any shortlists of centers of biomedical research, high tech, entertainment and the arts, media and communications, or professional services.

The large companies that I recall having been headquartered there — Greyhound Lines, The Dial Corporation — are now based elsewhere.

The impression I got from reading its monthly LGBTQ mag, which used to circulate here, is that Phoenicians basically spend all their time selling one another real estate.

Usually, where I see Arizona at the top of the lists is for scenery and retirement living.

Guys Phoenix has a lot going on by way of tech as well, it just hasnt been noticed by publications such as this, but I am pleased to see tech increase it's presence all over the country, the more competitive metros become, the better it is for the country as a whole.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned methods yet. It's pretty vague mostly, and relies on some sketchy points, but there are useful hints. The talent category is "in relation to each cities' (sic) size" for example.

As for Phoenix, we get that there's been an infusion. But people might be surprised by the scale you need to rank highly on any tech list, particularly when your city is in the 5,000,000 range or whatever. Think a six-figure number of high-end jobs, and not including most people at chip factories or call centers.

Unclear what the methodology is behind this? Hard to believe NYC ranks behind places like Austin or Toronto when it comes to "talent concentration.". Maybe on a per capita basis. But NYC has become a major tech hub with a huge VC industry.
