In a 2020's context. It's obvious both cities aren't stereotypically "Southern" in the way Atlanta, New Orleans, or Nashville is.
I completely disagree with this assessment regarding Richmond, especially when Atlanta is tossed in there as an example of being stereotypically Southern. Per the poll so far, it would seem that many others might generally agree with me.
Austin periphery feels stereotypically Texan to me, not Southern. For stereotypical Southerness, I'd look in east Texas.

Both Richmond and Atlanta are assuredly Southern, but I don't that they are so similar to the point that Atlanta being characterized as stereotypically Southern automatically means the same must be true of Richmond. Richmond is rarely included when talking about quintessential Southern cities on these forums but Atlanta is often regarded as the South's regional standard.
This is a difficult comparison because many people do not consider the area where Austin is located to be culturally southern. So obviously if that part of Texas is not viewed as culturally southern than Richmond would be more southern in the periphery. However southern culture is pretty diverse and one could consider Texas culture to also be quintessentially southern. So a bigger question would be is Virginia considered to be more culturally southern than Texas? Also which characteristics of the South are we using to compare the two cities? Obviously Texas has a lot of western influences so historically Virginia would have been the more traditional version of the American South. However I feel as though Austin's location in the deep south would make its periphery more southern than Richmond which is located closer to the Mid Atlantic region.

Richmond was developed earlier than a lot of southern cities -- like Raleigh or Greensboro -- so it feels more like a mid-atlantic city being denser and having rowhomes etc. Culturally Richmond and central Virginia is decidedly still southern.

Geographically Austin is in the South, but culturally it is far from Deep South.
