600k in Chicago can get you a nice crib in a good part of town. Easily the most affordable urban city along with Philly

Outer ring suburb to the east: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...4_M30377-22892

You honestly do not have to go that high to find a big house in the area...

For those going the condo route, prices don't go that high: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...25000?view=map

Same with Townhomes: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...25000?view=map

For Floyd County, IN (Louisville Metro area) you can buy a larger sized house with acreage:

Everything I look at in Chicago and NYC must be co-ops then because I commonly see that amount and above.

It should say what kind of unit type, co-op or condo.

I like this house a lot.
Yeah, but then you'd have to live in Alpharetta. Lol. Seriously though, that's actually pretty cheap for that area and I'm guessing it has some serious issues.

In my neighborhood, $600k is a 1,600 to 2,000 sf older cape on 1/4 acre where the house doesn't need major remodeling.

What's sad is that Melrose is probably not amongst the 50 most expensive towns in Eastern Massachusetts. I'd be surprised if there is a liveable house at <$650k, though the market craze has shifted a bit outward toward 495.

In the more upscale parts of Illinois, you can still get a nice home at that price, though updates should be expected.

I've found greatness in Naperville and decent in Lincoln Park for 600k. Boston seems to be pricier than NYC metro.

There might be an older fixer condo, if you look hard enough. Our median home is now $1.3 million. I just did a quick search, and we don't have that many condos anyway, but only a few for sale. The cheapest I found today was $790k.
