Because what he posted was a co-op, not a traditional condo unit. That is you pay $600K for the right to live there and be subject to the rules of the board, not to own it outright and do almost whatever you want. Co-ops have much higher HOA fees, but are cheaper than condos or houses.
Everything I look at in Chicago and NYC must be co-ops then because I commonly see that amount and above.
Yeah, but then you'd have to live in Alpharetta. Lol. Seriously though, that's actually pretty cheap for that area and I'm guessing it has some serious issues.
When my uncle died recently my 3 cousins sold the house for $875,000 last year and now Zillow estimated it at over $1million. The house is in Melrose MA, which is a very expensive area.
What's sad is that Melrose is probably not amongst the 50 most expensive towns in Eastern Massachusetts. I'd be surprised if there is a liveable house at <$650k, though the market craze has shifted a bit outward toward 495.
In the more upscale parts of Illinois, you can still get a nice home at that price, though updates should be expected.

There might be an older fixer condo, if you look hard enough. Our median home is now $1.3 million. I just did a quick search, and we don't have that many condos anyway, but only a few for sale. The cheapest I found today was $790k.
