How many Western cities really have strong identities though?

LA
SF
Seattle

Anywhere else?

Tucson and Albuquerque for sure. I would probably put Portland ahead of Seattle.

I voted Seattle, but only visited San Diego for the first time a few years ago. I had dismissed SD as a sort of a Phoenix -by-the-Sea, but when I spent a week there exploring it, I was surprised at what a strong identity it actually has. Not quite on par with Seattle, tho.

I would agree with this.

Seattle has the stronger identity for sure, but San Diego is an easy day trip from my house and it would be my hands-down choice if I had to choose one of those two to live in. Seattle is much more...intense, and the climate is not ideal for me.
