I admit the last one with Dallas + Oklahoma City vs Houston + New Orleans was not really fair. Dallas gets a new tag partner, San Antonio, Texas.

As usual, which of the two are better for

Amenities
Architecture
Cost of living
Crime
Culture
Diversity
Downtowns
Food
Friendliness
Future of those cities
Good place to live/visit
Growth
Nightlife (forgot to add this in the DAL + OKC vs HOU vs NO thread)
Outdoor activity
Political views
Population density
Quality of life
Skyline
Shopping
Sports culture
Things to do
Weather

As usual, which of the two are better for

Amenities Hou/ NO
Architecture HOU / NO
Cost of living HOU/ NO
Crime DAL/ SATx
Culture HOU beats Dal, NOLA beats SATx
Diversity HOU/NOLA
Downtowns HOU/ NOLA (NOLA beats SA, the other 2 are close)
Food HOU/NOLA by far
Friendliness tie I guess
Future of those cities IDK
Good place to live/visit HOU/NOLA
Growth. SA has a better outlook than NOLA
Nightlife NOLA carries the team.
Outdoor activity HOU/NOLA
Political views HOU/NOLA
Population density HOU/NOLA
Quality of life tie
Skyline HOU/NOLA skyline beats SA
Shopping HOU/NOLA
Sports culture HOU/NOLA
Things to do HOU/NOLA
Weather The heat index in the summer for Houston, DFW and SA average out to be the same so I would say HOU and NOLA because Dal and SATx have worse winters

New Orleans just far too adored. It doesn't matter what city pairs with it, it will be unbalanced. It just has a lot more of an uncommon ambiance that you find in all the other cities.

San Antonio and New Orleans are each over 300 years and both have an over abundance of historical significance. I would say they are both unique and not your typical major Sunbelt city. Dallas and Houston are a lot like each other just as New Orleans and San Antonio.

San Antonio is built like a typical sunbelt city outside the couple of square miles around the historic downtown area. Plus the culture SA exports, Tejano/Tex-Mex, is unique but not nearly as unique as the deep multi-national history a compact city like New Orleans has had. A city that has been one of the most important trade port for an entire contintent for centuries, which has added to its culture for as long as well. You can't say the same for SA.

The best cultural aspect of San Antonio is the Riverwalk. It's a very nice setting, it has a certain romance to it. It is probably the #1 tourist spot in the stare. But that is about as far as San Antonio goes.

The Missions are an added asset, but not all that interesting. And the Alamo is no exception. Mission San Jose is less known but more impressive than the Alamo.

The best way I can summarize the history of the two cities is that New Orleans represents a snap shot of what was considered a major colonial Era city. San Antonio represents fragments of colonial frontier outposts.

Walking through the streets of Downtown New Orleans creates vivid pictures of what life in the area was back in the day. You don't really get much of that in San Antonio.

Apart from the built environment, New Orleans has a strong showing in Music, food and even accents.

So, yes San Antonio has unique aspects to it, but it's very fragmented. The uniqueness is definitely not on a similar level to New Orleans.

Texas was still frontier land deep into the 1800's. New Orleans in the same period was one of the largest US cities.

San Antonio is far more than just the Riverwalk. There are 20 neighborhoods that are listed as historic districts by the national registry of historic places. In contrast New Orleans has 26.

New Orleans was bigger than San Antonio and even Los Angeles during the 1800's but how much of that era New Orleans still exists? It only has a few more historic districts than S.A. and it isn't as lopsided as you claim.

By the 1890 's New Orleans had a population in the low 200k range while San Antonio had between 40k to 50k.
Although a small town San Antonio was more than just an outpost, the city streets were labeled in German, English and Spanish. Nonetheless, I agree New Orleans was a several times bigger during that century. By 1920 San Antonio closed the gap a bit and reached over 160k and New Orleans 380k about the size it is today. By the 1950's S.A. was equal in size and surpassed New Orleans by 1960.

As far as a historical urban core San Antonio has the larger footprint but it doesn't have the same level of walkable urban density or overall cohesiveness. In my opinion it is not that far behind. S.A. has been developing many of it's urban districts and they are slowly becoming more cohesive. San Antonio's downtown area covers over 5 square miles and downtown New Orleans is less than half that.

As far as culture and atmosphere both cities have a sense of place and are on the same level for being unique, as Mark Twain touted both San Antonio and New Orleans amongst the most unique cities in the country.

S.A. is home to a Unesco World Heritage site and has also been designated by the United Nations as a city of Gastronomy for it's food, heritage and culture. Less than 40 cities worldwide have this designation.

Downtown S.A. has many historic landmarks, many lively squares, plazas, parks, several historic arts districts, cultural centers, museums, vaudeville theatre palaces, all centered around and urban canal system 20 feet below street level that meanders through several historic districts.

San Antonio is currently developing San Pedro Creek Cultural Park, it's second downtown urban waterway which is a nearly 4 Mile long linear Park which is similar to New York's Highline, which was designed by a San Antonian.

S.A. is home to the oldest cathedral in the USA and the second oldest municipal park founded in the 1700's by the King of Spain.

S.A. and New Orleans are not your typical Sunbelt cities. Both are heavy on historic preservation and each have their own strong city brand and historical significance.

I think all these cities are great, but if you must, San Antonio and Dallas have a bigger population combined. Also, San Antonio by itself is more of a desirable destination than both New Orleans and Houston combined for total annual visitors.

San Antonio right down the street from Austin. And it’s not too far from Houston nor Dallas Fort Worth. These beef up San Antonio’s numbers.

San Antonio in no way shape or form is comparable to New Orleans as far as tourism is concerned.

All the cities listed attract international travelers. San Antonio ranked amongst the top 20 U.S. cities for international travelers according to hotels.com and attracts considerably more annual visitors than New Orleans it's not even close.
