Before last year, other than small markets and delis, the nearest large full service grocers were Tops Market on the Lower West Side, and a Price Rite in Allentown, both less than a mile from downtown.

This is a really nice, well-branded high end gourmet convenience store chain based out of Chicago, FoxTrot Market, with locations already in DC, Chicago and Dallas.
Coming to NYC, Austin, Nashville and Miami, in the next couple of years, also.
Not sure if they'll be coming to all of the downtowns in these cities listed, but still an awesome gourmet chain that almost any city would love to have enter their market.
Unfortunately that Target in Pittsburgh, which will be opening in about two weeks, is only going to be like 22,000 square feet, so it will be more like a glorified CVS.
Yeah, Target is making huge strides now with their "urban market stores" developments. There are several here in New York and although small, they surprisingly have a ton of product.
This will make a big impact on downtown Pittsburgh, even though it's not huge.

They love students and students love them. I think Target is going slow on their large footprint stores.
