This will be interesting. This poll has 5 states (Both Dakotas, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska) which seem to have the the reputation of being the most plain-jane, rural, "boring" and located in Middle-America. Who has the strongest identity of the dive?

That is my pick because the Middle America values are strongest to me in those two states

I went SD but was torn between that and Iowa. The other 3 states seem featureless. I don't think any of them stand out culturally or historically.

South Dakota in the last few years.

Before that - Iowa, but it's not too far behind.

I'd say this is the ranking--

5 North Dakota - Fargo is famous, but I'd bet a lot of people don't know what state it's in LOL
4 South Dakota - Mt Rushmore; Sioux Falls is not that large or famous, but recognizable to most folks who read news
3 Nebraska - I think of "cornhuskers" first due to University of Nebraska football; Omaha is known for Warren Buffett and Mutual of Omaha insurance
2 Kansas - Wizard of Oz made it famous; Kansas City, KS is well known too.
1 Iowa - well known and "most famous" due to the presidential election primaries; known for its flat, lush, abundant crop fields; Des Moines is pretty well known as a capital city.

Nebraska has the largest and most well recognized city/metro of these 5 states (Omaha), with the largest and most diverse business presence and diversity of population as it’s a 1 million population metro. Iowa would likey be next (Des Moines) and then Kansas (Wichita). But number 2/3 are close, as their metros are closer in population.

If I went by this metric solely - I’d say

#1- Nebraska, followed by #2)- Iowa and #3)- Kansas. Then a toss up of the Dakota’s.

I’m not sure exactly what the OP is driving at with this state comparison, but I sense this might bring out some, let’s say, “not so positive” comments from others, especially those who live outside the region of these states. But I will also say all 5 of them are very underrated and have much MUCH more interesting and entertaining aspects to them. As opposed to the usual “farmland” “boring” “fly-over” dismissive commentary frequently seen. My .02 Cents anyway.

I went with Kansas.

With famous phrases like "we're not in Kansas anymore", its somewhat of an icon representing all of middle America. Beyond that, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska really only evoke collegiate athletics.

Though the Dakotas are making a name for themselves of late as a place to live and visit, we have to be honest and recognize that they are two of the most historically obscure states. If Iowa has the most voted from the political caucuses, well just lol.
