Welcome to the 2021 Demographics thread based on the ACS 1-year estimates from 2021.

I am going to do one thing different. I am going to separate out Arabs, Iranian, and Afghan populations from the white population and into their own category. I guess that is a little personal on my end. I fall into that category. Ive also broken out people who claim Brazilian ancestry out of the white category. I thought about including their numbers in the Hispanic total, but that didn't feel right either. I just felt that they don't belong with European white. There are some limitations. As we get to the smaller metro areas on this list, they don't all have this breakdown. I will list the demographics as normal.

So anyway, with that out of the way, here it is!

The Black population for Houston looks strange. Are they saying it decreased? Because in the other demographic thread, Houston has 1.209 million but this now says 1.207 million.

Either way, DFW momentum for its Black population now shows it has passed Houston. It was a matter of time. Also both are now larger than Philadelphia and DC metro has the third largest Black population in the nation passing Chicago.

It’s ACS so estimates are going to be a little different from census. They’re probably more accurate given all the shortfalls the census had. The benefit of the ACS is that it gives us scale better than the census does especially among ethnicities.

As for Black growth, the momentum has been with DFW over Houston for some time now. Id be surprised if Houston's black population decreased but Id also be surprised if it was still larger than DFW's.

It's showing a decline of 47,000+ blacks in Boston from 2019 1 year estimates lol. from 7.8% to 6.7%. Seems rather large. That's 1/8th chunk of the black population. These are the best you can do with estimates.

Idk I could be wrong it's showing the Black in Combo and including Hispanic population actually grew slightly.

It may be a question of semantics.

Im looking at the Boston and Houston black populations 2021 and 2019 1 year estimates.

If we look at black alone and black in combination, Boston's black population didnt decline. Its stayed about the same and is within margin of error. In Houston's case the numbers grew by about 50,000.

So it may be that its a question of some "black alone" numbers being shifted to "black in combination".

There is also the factor of Covid. There was a pretty significant exodus from costal cities because of it. Since these numbers cut off at June 30, 2021, we wont see the rebound here.

Probably. They may reflect the 2020 Census way of measuring race which often produced more mixed race and some other race counts. The City of Boston said the Census reassigned many Cape Verdeans to Some Other Race or Two or More Races.

Still strange though in Boston MSA the Black population declined a full percentage point in 2 years? and the white population declined 3 full percentage points in 2 years? The mixed race grew by 3% points? in 2 years.

I'm just saying, they're estimates. Still strange because in all the 1 year estimates from 2017-2019 it was pretty much yielding the same results. 69-70% white and 7.5% black and it changed pretty dramatically in 2021. Maybe it was reflecting years of lag?

I think it has to be some redefining because Boston didnt actually lose any when we consider black in combo and black alone together. Its only when we consider black alone by itself where that happened. Hell even Houston went down some on the black alone number.

Its probably going to have to change how I post the data if the metric themselves are changing and they sure seem to be.

I think it's worth noting, and good call-outs, to mention that these metro areas have the majority population as minority groups!

I love to see the diversity--and love to see the minority population take the lead, which is historically not the case in many of the metros.

Minority-led metro areas--

Los Angeles
Riverside
Houston
Miami
San Antonio
San Jose
Memphis
