Lots going on in Milwaukee's downtown...lots. There are downtown apartments being built, and The Couture, to which I'm attaching a link. It's a 44 story building, that will connect the lakefront to activities downtown. Also, the world headquarters of Northwestern Mutual is downtown Milwaukee, and they're bringing an additional 2,000 workers to their downtown headquarters. Lots of very high-end condos, and apartments will be a big boon to downtown. Also, the Deer District (where the Bucks play) is adding a hotel.
Also, the Ascent MKE is the world's tallest timber building, and it was just completed downtown. I'll attach a link. Like I said, Milwaukee's downtown is growing big time.
Idk .I don't think Boston is doing that poorly on a comparative basis. Sure the financial district office market is weak as workers telework and DTX retail struggles. But, either downtown Boston is a super tiny area subsumed by more vibrant areas or "downtown Boston" broadly defined seem to be doing ok.
Not best in the country, but ok relative to it's urban peers. But, SF and Seattle seem to have been hit a lot harder by the rise in crime/social disorder over the past 3 years. DCs downtown is pretty much dead in the water
Huh? Pretty sure Seattle has lower office vacancy than Boston, both in the city proper and the metro area (for metro it's 11% vs 19% in 2023 Q1).
Seattle and SF aren't the same. And with Amazon returning to office this May, the downtown activity numbers will be much higher in Seattle. Not surprising that Seattle is the fastest growing city proper in 2022.
Boston has to clean up the Downtown Crossing area first and foremost. Until then it's going to be considered the 3rd maybe even 4th option for businesses looking to be located "Downtown". In reality, they need to find a way to make it more family-friendly and/or more of an entertainment district with a high amount of policing. It seems like every week there a serious violent incident. Last week it was another stabbing.
It is just tough to do when Retail wants Seaport, Corporate wants Seaport Entertainment wants the seaport. Labs and Biotech wants Cambridge via Kendall Sqaureand Cambridge Crossing, traditional Finance wants the Finance District. Retail and dining look to Back Bay before Downtown Crossing.
And then you've got South End serving the more chic and urbane set, and Fenway serving more of the collegiate set, and with bigger, brighter, newer, venues.

What's really too bad, is it is one of the few areas across downtown that has a real "big city feel" to me. The theatres, the lights, the peak foot traffic. It's not doomsday there, but it's kind of the armpit of the core of Boston, replaced by neighborhoods like Seaport among others.
It's not like it's completely void of investment. High Street Food Hall, Yvonnes, Bogie's Place (looks incredible), Better Sorts Social, Democracy Brewing, Boston Chophouse... These are all nice additions over the last few years. Unfortunately, it seems like people will come to eat or drinks, and then leave. It's really not a particularly nice or fun place to hop around, and it hasn't given the area a facelift at all.
I have a lot of faith that DTX will be reimagined at some point in the not so distant future. Just not sure what that will look like and/or be. My hope is that it becomes THE nightlife district, which could ultimately connect the existing clubs and nightlife toward Boylston/Stuart St southwest of the Common/Public Gardens. Some clubs, cocktail bars, theme bars, comedy club, street food. It's literally the perfect place for it, as it's already pedestrian only in areas and it well connected to the core neighborhoods.

I haven’t been post pandemic but I love the feel of Downtown Crossing because as others said it has that big city feel that a lot of other areas of Boston don’t necessarily have. I hope it can recover.
Its issues are Dem policy and local leadership related.
SF is simply becoming what its residents wanted and voted for.
