A couple posters already mentioned Sacramento, which I think should be a serious candidate on your list. Mild weather year round, lots of outdoor recreation, and an incredible variety of breathtaking landscapes within a short drive -- mountains, rivers, alpine lakes, foothills, ocean, redwoods, delta, wine country -- not to mention the incomparable San Francisco. Before balking at the average summer highs, read up about the Delta Breeze, which makes most mornings and evenings just about perfect even on the hottest days.

Sacramento might be the most overlooked and underrated city on CD. It deserves a mentioned for sure.

Absolutely, Sacramento, always underrated, usually overlooked. Plenty to do in Sacramento itself, but it out does all the other western cities: slc, albq, boise, phx in diversity of outdoor environments. Not to mention in diversity of people.
You often hear Denver has "mild winters" based on various reasons as compared to much of the rest of the country.
Similar to Denver, but the opposite season, Sacramento has "mild summers" for distinct and unique weather factors compared to much of the rest of the country. Most people don't know this, even most Californians don't know this about Sacramento's very Cool Summer evenings, mornings and nights regardless of how warm or hot the the summer daytime high becomes.
Also, Sacramento is by far Sunnier than Denver. Colorado gets away with calling it 300 sunny days a year because if its actually partly to mostly cloudy they still call it a "Sunny Day". Sacramentans have a different standard, if there is just one moment of a tiny cloud, we not only DON'T call it a Sunny Day, when say it was cloudy. By Colorado standards, Sacramento has 365 Sunny days out of the year!

Sacramento is sunnier but this analysis is a bit misleading. Sacramento is the countries 3rd sunniest major city with 188 clear days and 3608 hours of sunshine on average. Denver is the countries 6th sunniest city with 115 clear days and 3107 hours of sunshine on average.
I think one of the biggest things I have to consider is the airport and time of travel. Denver vs Sacramento wise. Denver has one of the best and cheapest airports in the country. From there I can fly to see my family in MD say like twice a year. But flights from Sacramento will cost more. Denver puts me in a good place to fly more. Moving me and my dog to Sacramento would be a crazy endeavor. I am 29, but at some point in my life I may have reasons to head back to the east coast to be closer to family.
The one thing I like about Sacramento over Denver is trees. As beautiful as the rockies are, I've love the greenery of the appalachian mountains and will miss that a bit. However my favorite trees are evergreens. Mount Mitchel and Roan Mountain are some of my favorite places in NC.
I currently live in Durham, NC and its basically a city in a forest. I feel like the PNW is one of the most beautiful places in the US and has a perfect of everything I like, but Denver seems to win out on a lot. My brother will eventually be there, I have a friend in fort collins, the airport.. The rockies are amazing of course
Nah. Those foothills are nasty, scrubby. Lifeless. A NC mountain at Denver’s altitude would be 12,000 feet, so no slouch.
oh wtf I feel kind of sorry for you, but maybe if more people felt this way housing would be more affordable
