Plus not even 6 days into August, and D.C. Now has more homicides as of right now than in 2009-14, 2016-2018 total amount with 4 months remaining of 2023. Would not be surprised if D.C. now surpasses it's 2015, and 2019 murder count by next week.
Weren't there some years when DC had less than 100 for the entire year? I think it was around 2013-ish.

The Obama years. Thats when even Memphis and St louis also had under 100. Baltimore had about only 237 on the year also before Freddie Gray happened. That was America's best years similar to the 60s.l

the late 2000s all the way up to the mid 2010s (like 2017 ish-pandemic) was the golden age for cities safety wise. The Obama years, like you said. Chicago recorded under 400 homicides in 2014 (which was like a 60 year low) which reaching that number seems impossible today. New York in 2017 had under 300 homicides which made it ridiculously safe for a city of almost 9 million and earned its title as Americas safest big city. Like you said, Memphis had under 100 homicides. Gentrification was in full swing in alot of American cities, the whole transit friendly, yuppie hipster who wanted to live in a walkable city was very popular too. Ever since the pandemic, it seems like the tide has switched and now suburbia is back popular and cities are crime ridden and being left
Has it officially surpassed Baltimore in homicides?
Tie in raw total. But Baltimore counted I think 7 homicides that happened last year to this year's number, so technically Baltimore (city) is lower.
Both are at 161 right now. Per 100k DC still has a lower rate, but for years the raw total of DC is like around 30-40 lower than Baltimore (and per 100k it was usually around half of Baltimore).
P.S. I certainly didn't expect DC to catch up in raw total THIS fast...

The only modern years in which D.C. Had less than 100 homicides is 2012 (88 at a record low), and 2013 if you exclude the Navy Yard mass shooting which D.C. only had 91 homicides.
