Both are at 161 right now. Per 100k DC still has a lower rate, but for years the raw total of DC is like around 30-40 lower than Baltimore (and per 100k it was usually around half of Baltimore).

P.S. I certainly didn't expect DC to catch up in raw total THIS fast...
Yea DC usually has about over 100 less than Baltimore on average since 2015

Homicide is not the best way to judge crime. Assault with a dangers weapon is a better metric. I did a deep dive into the stats in one of the two wards in DC east of the river (Ward 7). Assault with a dangerous weapon has actually been falling over the last decade including this year. The problem seems to be the switches on guns meaning more bullets are being used, but there are actually less people committing violent crimes. Here is a breakdown:

Ward 7 in East of the River in DC

2014 YTD (01/01/2014 - 08/07/2014)
Homicide = 18
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 367
Robbery = 418

2015 YTD 01/01/2015 - 08/07/2015)
Homicide = 13
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 354
Robbery = 308

2016 YTD 01/01/2016 - 08/07/2016)
Homicide = 29
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 279
Robbery = 291

2017 YTD 01/01/2017 - 08/07/2017)
Homicide = 17
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 281
Robbery = 258

2018 YTD 01/01/2018 - 08/07/2018)
Homicide = 17
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 266
Robbery = 202

2019 YTD 01/01/2019 - 08/07/2019)
Homicide = 30
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 241
Robbery = 242

2020 YTD 01/01/2020 - 08/07/2020)
Homicide = 31
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 245
Robbery = 215

2021 YTD 01/01/2021 - 08/07/2021)
Homicide = 32
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 240
Robbery = 225

2022 YTD 01/01/2022 - 08/07/2022)
Homicide = 34
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 196
Robbery = 255

2023 YTD 01/01/2023 - 08/07/2023)
Homicide = 33
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 201
Robbery = 413

There is a reason crime and safety in DC is referred to as "the perception" of crime. Assault w/ a dangerous weapon is and has always been a better gauge of crime throughout a city. Assault stats have been falling over the last decade in DC and are at their lowest right now in the last two years. The difference is the type of gun being used in crimes. The guns being used now have a much higher fatality rating than guns used in the past. That is the difference. Robbery is up because of car thefts from juveniles which is a national issue.

Washington D.C. Stats

2014 YTD (01/01/2014 - 08/07/2014)
Homicide = 69
Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 1,431

Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 1,384
Robbery = 1,895

2016 YTD 01/01/2016 - 08/07/2016)

Assault w/Dangerous Weapon = 1,459
Robbery = 1,820

2017 YTD 01/01/2017 - 08/07/2017)

I hear you MD, but murder is the highest transgression there is and an insight in the mentality of these folks within the population. Great stat I've been looking for a breakdown by ward and ward 1 (Adams Morgan, U street) def has a problem.

Ward 8, 67 rate 78
Ward 7, 33 rate 40
Ward 6, 12 rate 14.24
Ward 5, 17 rate 18.96
Ward 4, 10 rate 11.81
Ward 3, 0
Ward 2, 4 rate 4.47
Ward 1, 18 rate 21.1

Pg county
Suitland, cap heights, district heights, Forestville 22. Rate 44

This is also where perception really comes in - Ward 2 (National Mall etc.) and Ward 3 (Georgetown, upper NW) are arguably where most people visiting DC go to, and those places are definitely very safe. Even Ward 6 (some bad area but also has The Wharf) isn't insanely bad.

Ward 1 does have a huge problem, though. Ward 7/8 is always "out of sight, out of mind" and that hasn't changed a bit. Still somewhat crazy that almost 2/3 of the homicides happened EOTR. Either way for Ward 1, I keep reading about problems in Columbia Heights, which was gentrifying but seems to be heading backward.

EDIT: Baltimore is at 164 (157*). So back above DC in raw total.

Crime is and always will be neighborhood based. In the wealthy parts of Ward 7 in DC, there is very little violent crime. These neighborhoods have a high concentration of the Black elite in DC and have very little violent crime. Each neighborhood is isolated from other areas by either parks, creeks/waterways, or highways.

Everything other than homicide is effected by reporting rates. Which the more violent the community the less reporting there is

You can see this where there is almost no correlation between Homicide and violent crime rate. Which is just, not true
