We used to aim for under 300 murders. Anything around 300 ballpark was a good number for NYC in the past.

It’s all relative. By US standards it’s good, but by world standards it’s not good. Spain has 47 million people and gets about 300 murders per year. Hong Kong has a similar population to NYC and gets about 20-30 homicides per year.

Even with the recent uptick, the numbers are still remarkably low when compared to historic stats.

You are using the lowest year on record as a benchmark for good...

If current rates continue, NYC will finish the year under 400, which is lower than 26 of the past 34 years.

We are all aware the US is generally an outlier among Western nations. But I'm not talking internationally, this is a US thread.

The word "bad" was a poor choice IMO, considering the current stats for New York City are much better than almost every other major American city.

Still higher than anything since 2012... I use pre-COVID numbers as my benchmark. When we are back to 300-ish number like usual, thats when things have stabilized.

The word bad is the right choice. I am not comparing NYC to "every other American city". I am comparing NYC to itself.
I don't care if the numbers are good compared to Cleveland, Memphis, or Jackson, MS. I am also not comparing NYC to 1990s, since if you do that, you can excuse pretty much everything up until the point they start lighting Times Square on fire.

That's the national trend though that NYC is just not an exception of. Most cities have their lowest numbers during the 2010's, but since the pandemic the trend has reversed and has gone up again.

2020 saw the huge jump in many places, and that number stay high in 2021. 2022 was lower overall and seems like things are also trending downward this year (although yes, it's too early).

BTW...those 2000 murders a year in NYC in the 90s is just insane .
