Pros: milder winters, beautiful mountains, nice beaches, rolling hills and minimal natural disasters. Strongly growing metro DC northern region, with good metro areas in Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Newport News and Richmond.
Cons: no "major city" outside of the DC metro suburbs to call its own; western, southern and southwest Virginia are sluggish economically
State of West Virginia?
3/5
West Virgina pros: Relatively inexpensive and stunning topography. Salt of the Earth type of people and unique things to do.
West Virginia cons: High poverty and drugs. Unwilling to progress with the times. Provincial, insular, and overly religious. No major cities.
2.5 Typical City nothing too major, has a pretty bridge that looks good lit up at night
2.6 Well positioned in the Mid West for short trips to Chicago Detroit St Louis Grand-Rapids Cincinnati Cleveland Columbus Indianapolis and Louisville

Missouri just doesn’t have much going for it. Apart from the ozarks there not much for recreation and St. Louis is pretty bad. KC is somewhat redeeming at least so I’m not giving MO a 1.

A really nice escape away from the day to day life. Not as built up as it could be, and that's a good thing.
A beautiful area sort of tucked away with amenities there for all you need while you get away. An under rated area, in my opinion.
3.3 Decent Downtown for it's size, economic strength as a center of insurance industry
3.4 In the Northeast Megalopolis easy reach to NY and Boston
3.3 Slight Crime Issue and declining population

4.5/5. Unusually attractive and charming state capital with the oldest state capitol building in current use in the country as the focal point of its harborside downtown (along with the harbor itself). Convenient to both Baltimore and Washington (and connected to the former by the nation's shortest two-digit Interstate, I-97) but way more pleasant than either. A little rough around the edges on its fringes, but that doesn't really detract from its assets.
I'm going to stay in this vein and the general region by crossing the Chesapeake:

One of those cities I see as nice to live in but not very interesting to visit. Great skyline for its size, but essentially it's a district of glass boxes surrounded by a VERY suburban layout. It's got a beautiful tree canopy and is a fairly clean city. But Charlotte is not very urban and there's not much about it that stands out as a city. The topography is a bit ordinary with no major bodies of water, though it is a fairly close drive to the mountains. I'd rather go to Atlanta. It's got more of the soul that Charlotte is lacking.

Atlanta is pretty good thanks to Buckhead and the Northeast suburbs. It’s a truly great value. I like how it’s close to the mountains and the summers aren’t quite as brutal there. It doesn’t get a 5 though due to crime, somewhat high taxes, and a lackluster downtown.
