My family wants to visit either San Francisco or Seattle next year, but the homeless population scares us. Which homeless population is worse? I know Seattle has more homeless people than San Francisco but we also care about the aggressiveness and how widespread they are across the city.

Neither would be my choice, that's for sure. There are plenty of pictures, articles, news stories, etc., on news sites on the internet...I would read about each city. There, you will get an unbiased look at what's really happening. Pictures tell a story that people might try to gloss over. I'd do my own research, rather than have biased responses.
If you go to SF, avoid going further west than the Powell BART station or Union Square. There are homeless east of there, but it gets much worse heading west to the Tenderloin. Once you get west of the Tenderloin it improves again, though not to perfection.
Seattle doesn't have a dead zone like that but the area in the South of downtown, around Pioneer Square, is its worst.
I've walked through the Tenderloin in groups plenty of times with no problem, but not for everyone. It's not ghetto dangerous, just lots of strung out addicts. In much of SF, it's safer to be a person than a car because the drug addicts are constantly looking for things they can steal and sell to support their habit.
One thing about the Bay Area is there's a lot to do and great physical scenery throughout the region. It's not New York where tourists go to the city and rarely make an excursion to New Jersey or Westchester.

Tents are largely gone from Downtown Seattle and the major tourist areas. The office population is still less than half back, so the office districts are pretty quiet, but it's not dangerous. Any major crime is big news around here.

San Francisco was absolutely incredible in the 90s and 2000s. I started noticing it's downturn around 2011 when the Occupy Wall Street group set up camp there... from then on it was all down hill. It still a beautiful city, if it could just get the homeless, open drug use and smash and grab crime (all of which is related) undercontrol it could be great again.
One's eyes can see for themselves. Television, YouTube, various news sources, magazines, newspapers, statistics, Spot Crime...the list goes on.
Watching YouTube videos and reading news articles is not “one’s eyes seeing for themselves”. It’s seeing through the lens of a certain framing likely meant to push an agenda.
Seeing for yourself is actually visiting and experiencing the city. But that would require you to see a few homeless people here and there and of course, we can’t have that for the precious CDers.
Yeah, the Fox News / Infowars / Sinclair type hit pieces were always outrage porn. And in Seattle's case they're ancient history.
