DC actually isn’t ranked very high for growth in the report referenced by the article:

https://kenaninstitute.unc.edu/wp-co...-10172022r.pdf

Only 0.9%. Tied with Chicago and Grand Rapids.
That's growth rate of the entire DC CSA with Baltimore, not simply DMV metro area.

I honestly think Atlanta has a chance to retake the lead over Seattle next year due to tech being down in 2022.

It agree, it's going to definitely pass Philadelphia and Seattle will be interesting. The thing that helps Atlanta and Dallas is the diversity in its industries and continued growth.

Some surprises:

Seattle ahead of Atlanta
Boston so close to Houston
DC ahead of the Texas cities.

None of those are surprising to me in all honestly. I could even see DC continuing to further its lead given all the investments there from Amazon, Boeing, Raytheon etc.

Seattle being so big in software easily boosted it in 2020-2022 but probably won’t boost it much moving forward. I could see Atlanta surpassing Seattle.

Seattle won't continue its recent growth, some of which was related to Covid -- online retail, the cloud, and business software all benefitted. But it's becoming more of an international air hub, and tech layoffs tend to help companies that could hire previously as well as spurring waves of start-ups. Global health and medical research are also good sectors spurred by billions in private donations. Long term, we should continue to punch well above our weight.

Seattle and Boston both had a sudden spike in GPD. Seattle got tech. Boston for pharma and biotech

In my opinion, I can see Atlanta retaking Seattle sooner than later. Boston I also don’t see slowing down as much as Seattle despite the covid related pharma surge

If I could be overly defensive for a second....

You're still on this, eh? I think people are so obsessed with "Corporate Tech", that they lose sight of where a lot of the work is happening. It's kind of like the folks who rank "Cities with the Most Fortune 500", which has become a ranking of cities with the most welcoming Corporate Tax policy.

Boston has tech. More, to be certain, as far as startups and innovation than nearly any city on this list. And, yes, it has a huge biotech cluster.

And, it's also one of the highest paying tech economies in the world, behind only the Bay Area in the US.
